This is Frederick Douglass. He was an enslaved person who did not know the day he was born in 1818 (or 1817). He was mere property, and that wasn't recorded.

He didn't live with his mother, Harriet, as she belonged to someone else. But Douglass records her coming to visit him while he was young.

On this day in 1945, an all-white, all-male grand jury in Alabama failed to indict any of the white men accused of raping Mrs. Recy Taylor, a Black woman. Despite a confession, the men were never prosecuted.

Today is Alice Walker's 82nd birthday. A novelist, most known for her book "The Color Purple," which netted her the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the first Black woman to ever win the award, she is also notable for rediscovering Zora Neale Hurston.

Without Walker, she may've been lost forever ❤️🖤💚

Mary Eliza Mahoney (1st licensed US Black nurse), Harriet Tubman (Civil War nurse), and Sojourner Truth (abolitionist, nurse advocate) broke barriers and advanced healthcare despite immense racial challenges, leaving legacies of courage and advocacy.

Today, February 7, 2026, is officially the 100th anniversary of Negro History Week and the 50th anniversary of Black History Month.

Carter G Woodson purposely started Negro History Week on February 7th so that it would end on February 14th, which is Frederick Douglass's birthday

Althea Gibson was the first African American to compete in a pro-world tennis tour and in 1956, the first African American woman to win a Grand Slam title. Overall, Gibson garnered 11 Grand Slam wins, including six singles titles. #BlackHistoryMonth

Clara Luper was a civic leader, schoolteacher, & pioneering leader in the American Civil Rights Movement. She successfully conducted carefully planned nonviolent sit-in in 1958 OKC which gained traction & quickly spread nationwide.

Bessie Coleman, the first Black person to hold an international pilot's license....just 12 years after the Wright Brother's first flight.

She became known as "Queen Bess" & "Brave Bessie" for the elaborate and dangerous aerial stunts she would perform.

#BLM OTD 1879 Black poet Effie Waller Smith was born in Pike County, Kentucky to former slaves. At 16 she began writing poetry & published her 1st volume of poetry, Songs of the Month in 1904 followed by Rhymes From the Cumberland & Rosemary & Pansies in 1909.

3. St Clair Drake. Sociologist & Anthropologist who wrote the landmark study on Blacks in the urban north as the Great Migration was underway.

He helped craft some of the first Black Studies curriculums in universities & was a leader in the decolonization efforts in Africa.

John Henrik Clarke only had a sixth grade formal education, but like James Baldwin, Clarke was an auto-didact who would become one of the most important thinkers and teachers of the 20th century.
