I understand your point about funding, but the toxic soup is British, I am afraid to say. When I lived in the UK, the between-the-lines arrogance was 'even' aimed at Nordics. The belief the UK is world-beating is not a trait of Boris but of the GB culture.

They pulled exactly this stunt in Rugby, so 3 nations founded the IRFB in 1887. England only joined in 1890. Have a nice plate of #EnglishExceptionalism

What's interesting and unique is how exceptionalist Britons (and it is only Britons in my experience) reject meeting either obligation.
They neither see that their state or they as individuals should meet obligations to allow them to live in say Spain.
