Well there's a Russian case against Euroclear in motion, but a case for compensation for asset theft can only really be heard if the assets are stolen.

Also: It would have given Russia a good argument to seize frozen EU assets in Russia (Euroclear has 17Bn EUR there) and potentially in other friendly jurisdictions (China, South Africa).

La Belgique et son Premier ministre ont finalement eu gain de cause: pour l’heure, l’Europe n’utilisera pas les avoirs russes détenus par l’institution financière belge Euroclear pour subvenir financièrement aux besoins de l’Ukraine. L’accord n’en affaiblit pas moins la position européenne.

La Belgique et son Premier ministre ont finalement eu gain de cause: pour l’heure, l’Europe n’utilisera pas les avoirs russes détenus par l’institution financière belge Euroclear pour subvenir financièrement aux besoins de l’Ukraine. L’accord n’en affaiblit pas moins la position européenne.

Other nations holding russian assets also have concerns; they were able to avoid having to voice them because Belgium’s holdings are so much larger. There’s far more complexity and nuance than you acknowledge.

Other nations holding russian assets also have concerns; they were able to avoid having to voice them because Belgium’s holdings are so much larger. There’s far more complexity and nuance than you acknowledge.

In this context, the fact that Belgium keeps making windfall revenue on immobilized Russian reserves (via taxation of Euroclear) must be re-examined. Belgium should transfer all that corporate tax income, with retroactive effect starting March 2022, to Ukraine in a transparent manner. Now. (2/2)

De intrest op dat geld bevroren bij Euroclear, komt van onze Nationale Bank. De belastingen op die intrest is dus een gedeeltelijke terugbetaling, geen winst. Dit zei Paul De Grauwe in De Afspraak van verleden woensdag.
