Awareness of backup power has become a larger part of my job than I ever imagined.
Early lesson: every hothouse flower (computers mainly) in the facility needs to be on a UPS so they don't get fried by the weekly generator tests.

This is the "hardest" science we get to see in HOMEBOUND, the description of the device which serves as the inciting incident of the novel, and the facts of its alterations.
An excerpt from Chapter 16 of HOMEBOUND. It reads: The Voice's coiled cables ran energy in two directions. Its "thorns" poked tiny, tiny holes in the Veil to draw its strange energy through and funnel it into the cables. First, a pulse was sent down the "stem" and into whatever it was attached to, giving it just enough juice to start "thinking." Then, a pulse was sent up the "stem" to activate the speaker in the "flower." If a connection was established, the speaker would crackle, and the Voice would begin a steady flow of energy up and down the "stem." That would allow the user to ask questions of whatever the Voice was attached to, and then the speaker would allow it to answer. Then, when the device was shut off, the object would no longer receive any essence from the Other Side, and the whole process would stop. There were only so many ways one could alter the Voice. The thorns, the stem, and the flower were the only functional parts. The stem fed power up from the affected object. That was how it sent signals to the flower, how the Voice allowed the object to speak. That also created a siphon, pulling strange energies from the object as quickly as they were put in. If Clyde had figured out a way to feed the siphoned energy back into the House, then it wouldn't go anywhere. Was it possible that the change was as simple as "reverse the polarity?" Ayo didn't–

Toy maker Basic Fun released 3 out of these 6 Super Mario themed Christmas ornaments in 2008.

The power-ups gift bag, Koopa Troopa and Bowser ornaments were never released. Eventually the ornament box art was changed in later shipments only featuring the Mario, Yoshi, and Peach with Toad ornaments.
Back of the ornament box art has the text "Collect Them All!" followed by images of each ornament. In the upper left is a gift bag of Mario themed power-ups like the classic red and white mushroom, a super star, fire flower and a question block with a tag that reads "For Mario & Luigi". Next to the gift bag is Yoshi wearing reindeer antlers followed by an ornament of Mario wearing a Santa hat and exiting a green drain pipe decorated with lights. The upper right features an ornament called "Koopa Troopa" but this is actually a Koopa Paratroopa because it is a winged flying red koopa. The Koopa is holding Luigi's green stocking along with a bob-omb. Bottom left ornament is rather unhinged - it depicts Bowser gleefully lighting the top of a snow covered pine tree on fire with his dragon breath. The snow covered pine tree is sitting on top of a yellow question block. And finally the bottom right ornament is of Peach and Toad ice skating. Peach presumably is a proficient skater as she appears confidently upright. Toad is sitting on his rear, collecting himself after falling on the ice.
