Release number 9 of '25 was WSR072: "Skylarks" - the 3rd album by HARESS

Haress seem somewhat unique within the revival of interest in traditional music. They might use motifs and feel from British folksong but they do so in new settings, informed by own backgrounds in underground music...

interesting reverse of something I talked about the other day, where modern songs with a clear origin are mistaken for traditional folksongs: "House of the Rising Sun" actually *is* a folksong. I always assumed it had been written sometime in the 1950s.

There are some tells on the folksong front, mostly by how they feel to sing without any musical accompaniment and particularly in a group.

I finished the first draft of the latest folk song re-setting last week. Time for the second draft. And then there's the melody to compose, although thankfully I have some voice recordings saved on my phone of some suggestions.

The one thing I do appreciate about the US is that no other culture I have ever encountered would produce a folksong where the devil challenges a kid to a duel in an obvious morality play about hubris and then the kid just absolutely kicks his ass and wins the fiddle

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

Here’s a glorious rendition of Hamish Henderson’s “Freedom Come-All-Ye”, sung by Karine Polwart in the Italian Chapel, Orkney. The chapel was built & decorated by Italian POWs during WW2 using scraps & reclaimed materials, & is still in use today

The folksong "yeder ruft mikh zhamele" is a good example of this. I might also say, more philosophically, that in EE, jews had a more flexible approach to names, famously resisting government last names. You might be "known as" Moyshe Brokhes or Moyshe Gel or

Today's happy #MusicTheory "Aha!" moment in my slow self-taught journey: I had written a piece in Dorian in the style of an English folksong. The verse resolution was bVII - Im, which worked okay, but felt weak. I banged around on the piano for a while trying to think of a better way.

A piece of a folksong from my novel Tales & Treasure

Running through the garden
Skipping by the trees
Where is she hiding?
Where could she be?
Is she in the window?
Is she in the hall?
Ah! There!
In a bright blue dress
Coming for us all
