The father of my children had haemochromatosis - undiagnosed until he went into liver failure. He received a transplant, but died from complications five years later. His dad was Scottish and his mum was Welsh. This condition is far more common - and far more dangerous - than many realise 💔

Terrible.

Haemochromatosis should be an obvious possibility given that iron tests are common and pretty cheap. Even if final confirmation takes longer and costs more.

We looked primarily at the main risk variant of Haemochromatosis, C282Y which is found in the HFE gene. We looked at its frequency across the UK Biobank in the major ethnic and ancestry groups.

A "celtic disease", we find it highest in Ireland, but also at high levels in the Outer Hebrides!

Anyway, he was really ill in his 40s and 50s thanks to undiagnosed haemochromatosis. Seventy didn't didn't seem realistic back then.

mum finally got diagnosed with the opposite issue - too much iron due to haemochromatosis. Her last doc had been shrugging off her symptoms for over a year of repeat appointments until I finally made her see someone else. 🙄 why is it so damn hard to get a good dr i swear.
