Hydrology = The journey of water on and above the surface.
Hydrogeology = The hidden world of groundwater.
Hydrography = The mapping of water bodies for navigation and exploration.
Hydraulics = Engineering the flow of water in systems.

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺, 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺, 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 and 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘴? These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but each one plays a unique role in how we understand and manage water.

1. Apply to whatever position interests you, but tailor the application to the posting. If you are a hydrogeologist but want to apply for a postdoc in geochronology, don't use the same CV and cover letter as for a hydrogeology posting.

I have been fascinated by the Lake Peigneur disaster since stumbling across it teaching hydrogeology many years ago.
Here's a short, but good video to whet your appetite for the book: youtu.be/p_iZr2-Coqc?...

Hydrogeology is a terrifyingly complex subject. I tried kriging for an analysis of groundwater, and a geologist I talked to about it laughed at the attempt.

Eurokarst 2026

This is an international meeting on the hydrogeology of karstified Rocks - think caves, limestone and chalk and their water resources.

Which is held in Europe. Hence the title.

The abstract deadline is now open, and closes 15th January. Pass the word!

Having learned what little I have about our electricity grids as part of my climate action advocacy after career in hydrogeology, that video was the first time I really started to think about load factor I'm willing to admit.

There is an advantage in being a survey geologist like Matt Joeckel and Jesse Korus (or Jon Smith and colleagues at KGS) and seeing a lot of outcrops and subsurface data in the course of work on hydrogeology studies, mapping, etc., and being able to draw on that in working on bigger picture stuff.
