The #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Paddling , that is any bird standing in water. That includes very very young precocial Ae'o like this little fuzzball on legs. :) 📷🦉🌿 #birds
Baby Ae'o (Hawaiian stilt) a tiny, tennis-ball sized bit of fluff on top of enormous legs that it'll grow into in a few weeks. The water is flat and reflecting the pre-dawn sky and there are numerous flies about the surface

So it's #FeedingTime for the #BirdOfTheDay theme: through timing, luck and a very fast shutter got this 'auku'u (Black-crowned night heron) in mid-strike. :) 📷🦉🌿 #birds
A black crowned night heron lunging forward for a fish. One back foot can be seen rapidly moving forward trailing across the surface, the other is planted behind. The neck is just starting to dart forward, the beak is open and the lower bill just penetrated the water....without a single ripple. There is a thorny snag in front and above, and the water looks white in the pre-dawn with gentle ripples

We hear that the #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LongBeaks, & no one does that as elegantly as a Hawaiian #stilt, or aeʻo. On Hawaiʻi Island, the largest populations occur on the Kona coast. Anchialine ponds along the Kona coast provide prime feeding sites. Look for stilts at Kaloko-Honokōhau NHP.

From high above #Kaloko-Honokōhau, you can clearly see the sandy berm at ʻAimakapā Fish Pond. This berm (a natural ridge of sand formed by waves) separates the pond from the ocean.
The berm allows seawater to slowly filter through the sand. This barrier helps maintain the brackish water.

One hidden treasure is our tidepools, where you might find #pipipi, or black Nerites. These small snails are endemic to Hawaiʻi, where they cling to rocks & thrive in this unique coastal ecosystem. As the tide recedes, they seal themselves tight.
