this is such a gut-punch of a book, unflinching and poetic. in less skillful hands it would be lurid and gross but washuta is an exquisite writer

(definitely not an Easy Smooth Read if you have any experience with disordered eating just fyi)

I've fisted artisan fermented dill kraut into the fridge's bowels and rolled choggia beets into its gaping crisper. I filled it and filled it. I chose grass-fed ground beef at the co-op, the darkest red pack saturated with hemoglobin, still half-alive. I propped up living watercress in a small mason jar with water to cover its root ball. I got a chicken. I chose tidy plastic bins of baby kale and arugula. Dozens of eggs. Cilantro and parsley. There are twenty different food groups that make up the balanced diet of hope I shovel into my throat. Every morning, I eat four eggs scrambled. Every day at work, for lunch, after picking through a Ziploc baggie of baby kale, I have a 20oz coffee with cream and maybe a Milky Way Midnight Dark. Every night for dinner, I eat gluten-free English muffins toasted with butter, one after another, begging myself to stop but lacking the fortitude. At night, I sometimes walk to the store for organic sunflower butter cups before I take my medicine and knock out my spider-crawling head. The fridge is a cage I fill with bluebirds and neglect to feed them. Before their corpses rot, I move them to the freezer, sealing their moment of decay. Later, I pull out pieces of flesh toughened by frost and force them between my jaws. My maw's joyless mastication processes protein-the mouth is the site of the body's acceptance of food so that it might pulverize it, break it into its essential components, absorb it, and assimilate it. Every cell, tissue, and organ is made of food. Last night, I removed one of the seventeen tins of sardines from my overstuffed pantry. I ripped open the metal loop before my brain could have a chance to disobey my will. Sardines are superfood. Sardines are packed with calcium, Vitamin D, taurine, selenium, omega-3, coenzyme Q10, and protein. My brain is a school of sardines. Tonight, three bites in, my gut gives the now-familiar heave that… of eating with a retch. I fight my diaphragm and force-feed myself. I don't do this often because I don't like to be reminded that my body is battling my good intention and winning. Until recently, I'd spent years ceaselessly and desperately hungry. In adulthood, I became the "good eater" my parents could never call me as a kid. Now, I must implement force-feeding after months with a deranged appetite. My stomach only wants soft things-gluten-free breads, cheeses, hummus-but my brain knows I can't build a body from them. I've filled my head with attack plans for killing my fat and making my body's systems work like machinery, and I've become certain that these soft things will make my body soft, and the exact substance my body doesn't want the muscle of other creatures-will make my body hard. In the end, my stomach wins. I eat the soft things. Maybe this is because my stomach, puckered into the constant wince of the chronic fight-or-flight response, cannot produce the hydrochloric acid needed to break down meat and tells me not to choose it. Maybe it's because the body craves the things it shouldn't have, and so it demands self-flagellation in the form of gut-scrubbing foods that wreck my skin and throttle my intestines. I would like to return to a time before it got so hard to eat, but eating has always been the hardest work I've ever had to do. I asked for potions in place of solids to chew but there were no potions. I asked for an IV drip of all the macronutrients and micronutrients I might need so that none of it would have to slide down my clenching gullet, but there could be no IV drip. I needed to figure out how to eat because life is made from food, built from its energy and shaped by its invisible micro-treasures, and so I needed to make myself a world of rules. RULE 1. DON'T EAT THE CAT. When I was forming my personhood, my parents were sliding from their West Coast hippiedom into the realities of late-eighties New Jersey parenthood, which I assume was well-stocked with books warning Mom and Dad about all the ways they might undo my creation. They decided that our house would not be a lawless one. They agreed upon one rule: DON'T EAT THE CAT. Mom and Dad borrowed our rule from the TV show ALF, in which a friendly extraterrestrial comes to live with a suburban middle-class family after his home planet exploded in a nuclear war. Where ALF came from, cats were bred for slaughter, the equivalent of our cattle, and he longed to kill the house cat and gnaw the meat off its bones. I didn't understand the rule, as Ziggy, our gray cat, was my brother. He didn't use words and didn't have to learn the potty, but he lived in our house and played with me. Soon enough, I would receive another brother, a pink one, and my parents never once told me not to eat him. RULE 2. EAT THREE BITES OF EVERY FOOD ON YOUR PLATE. I became difficult. More rules were in order. I was asked to try three bites of macaroni, three bites of peas, three bites of chicken parm, and three bites of salmon. My parents hoped to make me a more adventurous eater-hoped to get me to eat at all, but I would not. I had to return to my playing. My adventures took me to glacial rock faces, forest patches, and death mushrooms. I found a block of pure salt in the woods and licked it more than three times. I wanted nothing but the salt, no unfamiliar textures of flesh or meal, and I lapped at the salt until I was told that I had to stop touching my tongue to the mineral block meant to attract deer. I learned that deer had been coming into my house dead, called venison by my parents, one of the things I wouldn't 7

Urteil: überraschend gelungene Geschichte. Je nach Würzung und Knusprigkeit kann man da einiges draus machen (würde beim nächsten Mal den Airfryer einsetzen). Kraut & Sauce machen den guten Rest.
Ersetzt keinen Döner an der Bude, aber eine coole Alternative für den heimischen Genuss.

YOOOOO Berlin curry wurst was literally life changing (good) to the point i regularly dress brats with ketchup and S&B curry powder, like just crisped on the grill and inna bun maybe some onion but it’s a nice change of pace from hardt mustard and kraut/onions

I love me a patty melt. It is a top 5 sandwich.

While I love the original formula, I also really like a reubenesque version: add kraut and thousand island dressing.

Bonus points if you griddle the onions and kraut together.

Weiß hat Manet sehr fasziniert und beschäftig. Gerade kann man im Städel noch eine viel kleinere (Olympia ist lebensgroß) Studie über die Stofflichkeit von Weiß anschauen: das berühmte Spargelbündel.
Foto eine prächtig gerahmten Ölgemäldes. Querformat. Auf einem mit einem weißen Tuch bedeckten Fläche liegt bläulichgrünes Kraut, vielleicht Spargelgebüsch, darauf ein mit brauner Schnüre zusammengehaltener großer Bund Spargel. Der Bildhintergrund ist dunkelbraun.
