🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Mammuthus subplanifrons

From Late Miocene to Early Pleistocene South and East Africa, the east African mammoth is known mostly from dental material and represents the oldest known mammoth species. It already shows telltale features such as the spiralling tusks

This, or any giant herbivore battle, would be crazy to see in PhP Ice Age.

I’m pretty excited for Prehistoric planet: Ice Age. So I decided to draw a Woolly Mammoth! (Mammuthus primigenius). It’s far from perfect, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! #iceage #mammoth #prehistory #prehistoriceplanet

In 1799 German naturalist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach named it Elephas primigenius.

In 1828, the British naturalist Joshua Brookes used the name Mammuthus borealis for the sale of his fossils, thus creating the modern scientific name.
