OTD 1975 / 1980 / 1989:
Three of #DoctorWho’s greatest – and most frightening – stories begin.
Must be something in the water!
Pyramids of Mars
Full Circle
The Curse of Fenric
Magnificent horror heralding Halloween
Each raising extraordinary ideas as well as scary bits
I love them all.

You know how occasionally things occur to you that you wish didn't.
#DoctorWho Full Circle.
The Marshmen have no external genitalia. The Marshmen become Alzarians. Does this mean that Alzarians have no external genitalia?
Adric is an Alzarian.

I think the creepiness of season 18 gets forgotten in discussion of the high scientific concepts and social entropy, the Marshmen, Melkur, Tharils, etc, all lurk in the shadows until their true moral meaning is revealed nodding to classic English ghost stories. RIP. #doctorwho
There’s so much to say about Chris Bidmead’s Dr Who. Its pleasing coldness, its determination to turn maths into drama, its victory over the chaos and entropy that plagued his predecessor. Traken/Logopolis/Castrovalva are all one story, aren’t they? His Master’s Masterplan. RIP

It’s weird. I mean, by the mid-80s some of the cliffhangers were truly dismal – maybe 12 of the Trial of a Timelord cliffhangers were close-ups of Colin Baker’s face – but the best were outstanding. Of those first episode cliffhangers, I particularly remember the marshmen emerging in Full Circle.

Going to ignore this and get rid of three instead. It's easier then - the middle column. K1 robot was destroyed so I can't have that. Axos was trapped in a time loop, so that's gone as well. And the Marshmen are in E - Space and I'm not keen on getting stuck in there.
You can only keep three challenge: classic-era Doctor Who monsters (apart from the obvious).

…of those stories where the monsters aren’t actually malicious but just acting on normal instincts. In a further twist, the residents of the Starliner are actually evolved from the Marshmen, something which Adric never really addresses in the future. Then again, he was an outsider from the start.

Re-watched two more Classic Doctor Who Tom Baker serials yesterday, "City of Death" and "Full Circle". Both stories were a lot of fun, with some wonderful moments. The former was definitely a showcase for Paris, the latter for the body costumed Marshmen. :)

Traken, State and Full Circle remain among my favourite stories , know people say its aimed at older audience than s17 but there's enough to entertain kids as I was all that time ago (large lizards, talking cactus, marshmen, vampires, walking corpses etc and Tom is still Doctorish enough)

From my first memories of Marshmen and the Doctor looking like a cactus. To rediscovering the TimeLord in the New Adventure years. Through to actually working 10 years for @bigfinish.bsky.social with Doctors 4,5,6,7&8.
Happy 61st Birthday to the Time Lord and your blue box.

That's the part of the cycle I can't actually picture in my mind. That sort of implies that there are mid way stages around somewhere. I can see the Marshmen changing into the Alzarians within a "few" generations but the spiders baffle me.

Sorting through some old family photos I found some pictures from the Doctor Who 20th Anniversary event at Longleat in 1983. Those are random peope with the TARDIS but it is me with the Kraal....

Do the marshmen…possibly the most underrated monster the series has created.

I think my brain had assumed spiders and marshmen had a common ancestor but were two diverging branches of life on the planet.

K9 was back to functional status in the next story, so naturally JNT had to demand that one of the monsters literally knock his head off with a log. Other than that, "Full Circle" is a pretty good episode despite a few rookie writer mistakes. The secret of the marshmen is not obvious, and it’s...

Eric Edwards (1940-2012) was a reed cutter in the Norfolk Broads for nearly fifty years.
He used the traditional methods employed by Norfolk marshmen for centuries and collected many of the tools used in bygone days.
