I enjoyed this enormously - a great reminder to a show I remember from childhood. Even to young me, Kenneth Williams' voice was just fabulous to listen to.

Also visually it’s about creating a striking “real” world within the graphic style of computer games at the time.

But big games are now aiming for levels of photo realism. So what are you designing the world within the computer for.

I agree - "Manhattan" is now one of the hardest of films to try and separate the art from the artist when rewatching. But its often hard to avoid even slight lines in other films that now hit different. Even just the appearance of an incredibly cool teen girl character lands differently.

117. Andrzej Żuławski’s peculiar blend of pretentious hysterics and visual sheen finds probably its most comfortable home in early eighties horror. “Possession” is weird and visually engaging but also annoyingly pompous and overly actorly. At its most effective, though, it’s truly unsettling.
Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani in “Possession”

116. “Tron” remains a glorious visual feast, sitting well within the tradition of seventies sci-fi psychedelia alongside eighties visual bombast. The story loses stream in the final third, but it’s carried along by a great sense of fun.
Cindy Morgan and Bruce Boxleitner in “Tron”

115. “Ghost Stories” is a curious adaptation. Its fidelity to the source material means it recreates scares that were fabulous on stage but just seem ok here. And while it strengthens the overarching narrative in clever ways, it doesn’t really fix its fundamental problem - it still lacks impact.
Andy Nyman in “Ghost Stories”

While Tadhg's video on the fall of Assad just feels so bizarre after his comedy depictions on the coup in Niger. Where the fall of "Baz" in Niger was the source of much hilarity - but when it comes to Syria we really need to pay respectful silence to His Grace Bashir Al-Assad.

Liam's far from the worst but there's something weird in posters who post endlessly about how they are so pure in their despair over the situation in Gaza because, they unlike others, have not lost their humanity. Then occasionally add that Ukrainians in Russia can go get fucked, the Khokhols.

The frothing hypocrisy of the pro-Brexit Telegraph is breathtaking.
Telegraph newspaper headline

The hypocrisy of the European Union is breathtaking
Given how easy it is to get across the Channel this way, the added friction of travel to the Continent is a pointed insult

The European Union has seen finer days. Its ageing population is about to enter a steep decline, driven by tumbling birth rates. Geopolitically, it is fast becoming an irrelevance, as talks on Ukraine, on Israel and on the future shape of the global security order are carried out above its head. And economically it is moribund, a drifting hulk tangled in a sargasso sea of regulations, watching enviously as American and Chinese tech companies build the industries of the future.

People keep telling me the UK is so over and they're going to move to Dubai and, like, fine. Go on then. Would you like directions to the airport?

Bitterly disappointing. It lacked the free wheeling invention of the first film, in favour of too many callbacks. And the way it still managed to involve Jeffrey Jones was just bizarre.

Pretty confused by how TRON became a big-budget movie franchise. Was it a bit hit when it came out? No. Did it become a big hit on video/TV? Also no. Do people have fond nostalgic memories of it? Eh kinda but not really. Was it secretly great and critically acclaimed? No again

It does amaze me, though, that this was made around the same time as "Aliens". And somehow cost much more.

thinking about this screenshot from Columbo that makes it look like a 90s point-and-click adventure game
screenshot from the TV show Columbo. the titular character Columbo is shown standing at the edge of a driveway, looking down at golden retriever who is happily basking on the pavement in front of him. the subtitles read: "You're a real friendly boy, aren't you? Oh, you're a girl."

I remember visiting Almouth and assuming it’d be pronounced something like Ol-muth. But the locals said “Al Mouth” pretty much as written. Right. So next day I went to the neighbouring Alnwick so assumed pronounced Aln-Wick?

No, that’s Annick.

TRUMP: Suspending who?

Q: Habeas corpus

No, it's not. It's all a lie. The blunt truth is across the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them.

Outstanding piece by Stephen Daisley.

Ethnicity is no barrier to Britishness - it's culture and integration.

That means 'smaller cohorts and aggressive integration policies' - and tackling the institutions that 'have amplified grievance narratives and radical anti-Western ideologies'.

oh yes, definitely not defeatist. Aragorn’s coronation is a triumph even though we know Gondor itself will one day pass.
