For hardware synths (my main interest), it's a trade-off. The cheap ones usually skimp on physical controls and make you go through tedious menus that make it less beginner-friendly, but there are some that balance the two pretty well. For that reason I often recommend a Minifreak or Minilogue XD.

February 3: the MM2 doesn't have ring modulation, the Minifreak has some but I don't know how to use it. Currently learning how to possibly get it working in Ableton itself.

Played with the minifreak a bit last night and set some things up.
Mixer will be here tomorrow and plan to spend some time making patches and learning the devices.
Sequencer will be here Monday and the controller is on back order.

quick little doodle because I've been neglecting my korg volcas and thought using the keystep to run an arp on the volca keys would be cool
if I'm ever gonna start doing live stuff beyond DJing I probably should practice shit like this more anyway

Microfreak is great but no effects, so I have Zoom 70CDR+ pedal and a Korg NTS-1 to run it through for that. I have a Keylab midi keyboard so I wouldn't really have enough room for the Minifreak.
I really have too much stuff for how little I use it - need to knuckle down!!

crap, MM2 has a global filter (so the sub would also get filtered). I guess it's time to go back to Analog in Ableton...

so TLDR if you've got the means to save up for a big fancy hardware setup. Minifreak > Qi/Microcosm > RV-500 > Xero/22500/DX4 would have you set for YEARS imo. if not, Minifreak V software + deelay + valhalla supermassive will also do very cool stuff for a LOT less money and space.

if you end up with the budget and want a physical hardware setup, and I'm saying this knowing the budget would have to be pretty damn big, Minifreak, Qi or Microcosm, a 2 channel looper and maybe a dedicated reverb just to have more options for that will get you SO far with only 4 pieces of gear.

the Minifreak has an audio input jack so you can use it to process audio too and throw its effects on stuff which is nice if you aren't a freak with a million reverb pedals like me lol. the minifreak has so much going for it I would not look at the micro's capacitive keybed as a motivating factor.
