That’s it for my witchy! Tomorrow we start staging of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea in the morning, and Weinbergs’s Kain und Abel in the evening. Crazy, but fun crazy!

Anyone have a recommendation for Monteverdi's sixth book of madrigals? I love them but this, my only recording, is a bit bloodless, despite the great singers (Kirkby, Tubb, Agnew, et al). @dancingmonk.bsky.social @lisasass.bsky.social @mostlyrambling.bsky.social @loveinner.bsky.social

Funny you mention "CARMEN"...that was The Met's live broadcast last Saturday. I'd like to see a production of that some day.

Monteverdi's L'ORFEO is another on the relatively short list of operas that I'd pay to see.

Max Cencic as Monteverdi's Nero, looking as if Sonya Yoncheva's voluptuous Poppea has already frazzled him. Singing "Pur ti miro, pur ti godo" ('I adore you, I embrace you'), they advance downstage, having sex in acoustic form. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oADm...

On 13 March, the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater in Schwerin will stage Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea. The same opera will premiere at the Theater Lübeck, just 55 km away, on 14 March. Perhaps this is a consequence of keeping the programme a secret until the start of the season.

All the Mozart/Da Ponte operas have excellent libretti! And Strauss/Hofmannsthal. And Monteverdi's operas. I also really like Felice Romani (Norma, Elisir d'amore, ecc.) or Salvadore Cammarano (Trovatore, Lucia di Lammermoor, Luisa Miller), they are very good librettists! :D there's lots of them!
