"Five of the individuals referred to the NACC by the Royal Commission were public servants & one was a politician. All six were referred with recommendations for civil & criminal prosecution."
My update on NACC's revisiting of robodebt.

The Robodebt six. Is the NACC protecting Scott Morrison? - Michael West
The NACC is considering investigating those deemed most responsible for Robodebt, and whether to make the hearing - any hearing - public.

Andrew Klein: “The NACC’s most public disgrace was its handling of the Robodebt scandal. Despite a Royal Commission referring six public officials for civil and criminal prosecution, the NACC announced it would not investigate a single one.”

Andrew Klein: Operational Timidity, Protection Racket Culture

The NACC’s leadership has been defined by caution and an aversion to risk. Experts like Geoffrey Watson SC criticised its “timid and negative” leadership, which expresses reticence to pursue cases for fear of being challenged in court.

NACC had signed up for $30 million worth of fit-outs for NACC’s offices in Canberra, Brisbane and Perth without proper approval or disclosure.

NACC’s challenge: Integrity is achieved by trust

Why the NACC faces an exceptional challenge to ensure integrity
Few issues unite progressive and conservative voters. Ending corruption is one of the few exceptions.

One of the NACC’s reasons (excuses) for not pursuing the Robodebt 6 was the RC had already done the investigation. Even though Commissioner Holmes clearly thought otherwise by giving the NACC the sealed file. The RC found out what, when and who. It never determined why. That is the NACC’s job.

Can’t say NACC’s not working. Working just fine - providing cover and a sense of decency while not bothering anybody

“Mr Brereton… told Australia that he had not in fact been involved in any of the NACC’s Robodebt decision making process, and then was found to have sat in on…almost all the Robodebt senior decision meetings… the Commissioner who was also a very close friend of one of the key Robodebt accused…”

Funnily enough, Sarah Henderson is quite concerned about the NACC’s dealing of the Brittany Higgins compensation case given the outcome of a finding from August 2025.
But she’s has ZERO concerns about the outstanding Robodebt referral from July 2023.

I think one reason Albo's govt is overly secretive is that it's paranoid about the opposition and its media mates spinning scandals out of minor shit

In NACC's first 6 months, LNP flooded it with with vexatious referrals (eg about payout to Higgins)

LNP uses FOI vexatiously too.
Spot on

“Political journalists and every opposition staffer are currently scouring the records of the independent parliamentary expenses authority looking for a fresh angle to try to claim the scalp of the communications minister, Anika Wells”

There's a feeding frenzy over Anika Wells' expenses. But if we want women in parliament it needs to be more family-friendly | Sarah Martin
The official justification of the allowance is to facilitate ‘the family life of the parliamentarian’. Yes, they are supported by the taxpayer to have one

The hearing into the NACC Inspector’s annual report and the NACC’s annual report are on this morning and I’ll be asking questions about conflicts of interest, Robodebt, the huge delays on inquiries and more.

The NACC’s warning to departments showed 1 in 6 government workers surveyed (15%) admitted to witnessing but failing to report, and at least 554 public servants said they had witnessed but failed to report corruption, including nepotism, fraud, cronyism and conflicts of interest. #auspol
