You ever wonder what Greek sculptors would say if they saw what we think of as Hellenistic sculpture?

Of course, all of these images of Phidias and other historical figures were made after their deaths. We don't really know for sure how he looked. But as a model of his face, it's very close to the bronze statuette, which is why one of the possible identifications is Phidias.

Definitely a resemblance to sculptures of the great man. That head and this bronze were exhibited together in 2024 at the Musei Capitolini in Rome, where I got a good look at them both (head below). Definitely maybe. 😊

Well, it’s been loaned out a few times over the last several years. I first saw it in Rome in spring of 2024, for an exhibition on Phidias, then was surprised to see it at the Met a few months later. It’s in Gallery 164, with the large frescoes from the villa of P. Fannius Synistor.

Yes, the detail of the belt knot and the wax tablets really intrigues me. You're right about the face - it's very specific, and I think it had to have been modeled on someone the sculptor knew. Or modeled on a larger sculpture of a famous individual like Phidias, now lost.

This Hellenistic bronze statuette depicts a thickly-muscled craftsman, identified by his short tunic and by the wax tablets tucked into his belt. He may represent a famous or mythological figure - Daidalos, who built the labyrinth at Knossos, or the sculptor-architect Phidias. 🏺 1/

The Wounded Amazon was born from a 5th century BC art contest for the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The greatest sculptors, Polykleitos, Phidias, and Kresilas, each made their version. When it came time to judge they all chose their 2nd favorite work and Polykleitos won. History remembers the doers.

“There is a connection between progress of a society and progress in the arts. The age of Pericles was also the age of Phidias. The age of Lorenzo de Medici was also the age of Leonardo Da Vinci. The age of Elizabeth was the age of Shakespeare.”

The neoclassicists *knew* that Roman buildings and statues were heavily colored. They had Alma-Tadema's "Phidias showing the Frieze of the Parthenon to his Friends." The Ecole Beaux Arts sent students to Greece and Rome to sketch ruins, and they still had original coloration!

Around 430 B.C., the great sculptor Phidias was commissioned to craft a super-sized statue of Zeus covered in ivory and gold. How would the 42-foot-tall god have looked to worshipers?
