I have a suspicion that Sturges actually wrote an ending where the judge lets her go but the scene was cut because of code and direction. There are a couple of clues.
-The Judge saying I don't know

My heart breaks for Lee in this scene where she interacts with her abusive, rejecting mother. I know intimately what that’s like. We’re supposed to seek care and concern from them, but when they turn cold, absent, and rigid, there is no care to be found. 😭

After searching, I'll infer that stealing a big ol diamond bracelet in 1940 worth more than $500, grand theft larceny 1st degree, and since she pled guiltyand the DA is in love with her, she might get out in a couple three years, maybe less with good behavior? > #RememberTheNight #TCMParty
