How do we assess Rome's “Crisis of the Third Century" from below? In a well in the Croatian city of Mursa (modern Osijek: pleiades.stoa.org/places/197389) they found a mass grave, which they believe are Roman soldiers, possibly casualties from the battle of Mursa from 260 CE (OA article in PLoS One)
Multidisciplinary study of human remains from the 3rd century mass grave in the Roman city of Mursa, Croatia

To celebrate #InternationalArchaeologyDay I’ve explored the incredible ruins of the Baths of Caracalla not far from ancient Rome’s Circus Maximus. Caracalla’s mega complex included exercise areas, a 50M long swimming pool, a temple to Mithras, and a space where 6,000 Romans could relax.

It is debated the extent that Rome was a true democracy. The city always had a well-established aristocratic political class.

But I am convinced that the mechanics of popular election and legislation was a critical to Rome's dynamism and success. People voted, and their votes counted.

part of rome's entire thing that made people in the outlying areas not constantly sick of the whole affair was that if your bridge got broke, it'd get fixed! there were upsides to living in the empire!

now we don't even have that. we have warbands raiding our towns! the local lord bows to them!

Ostia Antica is the place to be if trade overseas is your thing. Having a blast working out where all the merchants, negotiators, and traders came from. Ostia was Rome’s major port.

Wow, gotta say, I don't want that angry fascist shit happening at any dem rally. I think all this MAGA stormtrooper stuff is going to ppl's heads. We need to save the hate for the haters. That goes for CodePink too. She can post her opinions abt Harris' cowardly stance on Israel, but Rome's burning.

I think it’s more the opposite - these areas were self-sufficient economically and did not really require the Roman Empire and thus threw off its vampiric shackles earliest - similar story with Postroman Italy, which thrived without being beholden to Rome’s extractionist policies.

As a Protestant, I love to see it, and feel a little weird being on Rome's side for once.

Luckily, we Protestants have no problem opposing other Protestants.

🇮🇹 Did you know?
Over €1.5 million lands in Rome’s Trevi Fountain every year—proof that tourists take “throwing money away” very literally. Luckily, it’s not wasted: the coins go to charity, helping the needy instead of just making Rome sparkle a little brighter.
