#Sklithro between four mountains Parnassos, Oiti, Vardousia, and Giona. Nature rules here, with fir and walnut trees embracing the village. Historically significant for the battles of Jan '44, this peaceful retreat is just 17km from Gravia. A perfect escape into history and nature #Fokida #Roumeli

#Giona, the "Moonless Mountain." 🌙

Where mythology whispers that the Moon used to descend every night to meet Endymion. The "roof" of Roumeli, with its peak, Pyramida, piercing the sky at 2,510 meters and the imposing vertical cliff of Sykia inspiring pure awe. #Roumeli #Mountains #Fokida #Pyramida

Roumeli: Travels in Northern Greece by Patrick Leight Fermor
All travel books are nostalgic: They record memories of a trip that is past, and more than a few lament the way the place they are writing...

Many of them today would be called "terrorists." Tripolitsa would be considered a "massacre of civilians." The ambushes in Roumeli would be called "attacks on high-risk targets." And yet, history ranked them not based on the violence they inflicted, but on the violence they suffered.

...(and non singing) hiker, lol. Toward the end of the gorge the the 100 meter tall cliffs spectacularly narrowed to a passage width of less than 10 feet, an area known as "The Iron Gates". From there the trail opened onto a wide beach at Agios Roumeli. Since there were no roads or motor vehicles,..

Blimey, no such drama when I was there (1991). A hot, sweaty hike with a dip in the sea and a beer at Agia Roumeli at the end. 😎

Yes, a really amazing journey in so many ways. Especially if you can track down some of the watercolours and sketches he did on these two trips combined in the book. Ah, Roumeli - might be time to return to it!

Oh goodness, how fascinating - I shall have to seek this out tomorrow now Julian. I’m reading Roumeli (again) which always makes me think of standing on the border of Albania and Greece and musing on “things lost but not forgotten “

One of the joys of reading Fermor's Mani and Roumeli was finding out about the deeply devout Orthodox mountain shepherds of 1950s Greece doing rituals to keep the Centaurs and Nereids away

There's a part of what used to be called Roumeli region, from around November through April, it is the season for lavraki (sea bass), the rockfish govios (goby), and a small local shrimp, roughly an inch long, that is fried &eaten whole.
