Hi friends, I haven't posted in over a week as I wanted to have a short break from socials, but I'm back!
I'm currently testing out my new
*SIDKick Pico (inexpensive dual-SID-replacement for the C64 and C128)* 🤘

Check it out!!!! 👇

PSA: the small and mighty SIDKick Pico works perfectly with the Commodore 64 Ultimate, before you go spending three figures on an original SID chip in case the on-board UltiSID doesn't float your boat.

Playing with the new SIDKick Pico firmware and getting slightly obsessed with 6581 filter curves, and the work of Antti S. Lankila. His web site has been offline for a while, but the Wayback Machine saves the day:

Holy sh*tballs! The SIDKick Pico firmware just got updated, adding filter curve adjustment options and - get this - presets! I have never seen a SID replacement with presets before.

Set it on 6581R4AR and fired up my go-to test from the late, great Peter Clarke. Have a listen for yourself. 🎧

Niiice, I think it’s pretty great so far, but I really need to source another 8580R5 or just go with ARMSID/sidkick pico. Ultisid needs some thickening

Difficult finding a good SID chip. No longer made and the prices for existing ones quite high (especially with the Tariff Tax). I've been trying alternatives for my 326298 Rev A C64.

Soldered this monster SIDKick Pico PWM, checked that the keyboard fits and it sounds great!! WOW good. $15 and a Pi

Despite the Commodore 64 having been out of production for probably longer than many Hackaday readers have been alive, its SID audio chip remains a very […]

Finally found some spare time to tinker with my Commodore and its #sidkickpico 2040 DAC while doing some beta testing for Frenetic and some chiptune test recordings for me. Could this result in some chiptune music recordings appearing on my otherwise […]

Had a spare C64C case and keyboard so bought a loose, cheap (ish) short board off of eBay.

Needed a VIC, SID and a new switch, but it works great. Used one of my SIDKick Picos and wired in the second emulated SID. LED gaves it a heartbeat.

#phantastikprompts 3.11.

Hmm, says "The world's first Public Domain SID 6581/8580 replica chip available on the market" ?

"Public domain" is not "open source", but I don't see the firmware or gerbers for this anywhere. Seems to be very similar to SIDKick Pico, which is open (only the PCB layouts are not downloadable).

Well, RIP my 8580 SID. Got my C64c out of storage and almost nothing makes sound anymore. Has anyone ever fit a SIDKick Pico in a 250469 short board? I'm worried that it might be too tall and run into the keyboard.

Armsid sounds great, sidkick pico is mostly good but affordable, and kung fu sid is amazing but requires getting pcbs/components and building them out. crossing my fingers for the fpga implementation being good enough for dipping my toes into tracking

w00t got it fixed. I need to upgrade Redis, it was too old and pissing off sidkick causing errors.

Could that be because he has eventually realised #Farageriots and his sidkick Dickie with the fixed grin have no idea what they are doing? Hmmm

From the latest release notes, it seems there are still a few things missing. I'm sure it will be up there with ARMSID in time.

SIDKick seems top end though, it's ReSID on a [very cheap] chip with a hardware DAC. ARMSID seems to manage it in software just fine though.

Final words, for now... I love this little device. To build a replacement SID using off-the-shelf parts and not even need the Pico anymore, feels like a huge win.

Best of all, they sound AMAZING. Better than some of my real 6581s. Better than ARMSID? I think so, YMMV 😉

Finally got around to making an audio breakout cable for the SIDKick Pico 2040DAC. Since these devices were so hard to assemble, I wanted to at least hear them properly! 😄
