Mets are factoring in the strength of the 2026 free-agent pitching class when weighing roster decisions this offseason, per Will Sammon.

The group could include Tarik Skubal, Chris Sale, Kevin Gausman, Freddy Peralta, Sandy Alcantara, Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, and Jesús Luzardo.

His midseason trades in 2025 seemed to indicate it… at the end of the day you’ll see that I’m right or you’ll see that I’m wrong. Either way. I can certainly see these reports from Sammon and Rosenthal happening. There is no reason for them to make anything up and there is a track record there.
December 14, 2025 at 12:26 AM
Clickbait is usually free posts to get clicks. The Athletic is a paid service and Sammon, the Mets beat reporter there has a good track record. There is no clickbait incentive.
December 14, 2025 at 12:19 AM
No reason not to trust Sammon… Rosenthal has a pretty good track record too. Want to argue Heyman has a less than stellar track record that’s fine. Stearns also has less than stellar track record.
December 14, 2025 at 12:11 AM
John Heyman has also reported McLean and Benge are supposedly the only untouchables.

Ken Rosenthal also worked with Sammon on the report.

All this information is from those sources, with Sammon & Rosenthal reporting Mets and Padres in active trade discussions
December 13, 2025 at 11:59 PM
These names are discussed by Will Sammon in his report on the Athletic earlier today- Sammon is more often correct than not- he’s a Mets beat reporter and he used to cover the Brewers coming up along side Stearns. He did say the Mets are trying for Mason Miller as well, but I think Stearns will miss

Brewers’ Nick Mears Garnering Trade Interest
The Brewers are getting calls about right-handed reliever Nick Mears as teams around the league look for under-the-radar bullpen help, per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Milwaukee has also gotten plenty of interest in closer Trevor Megill and ace Freddy Peralta this winter. There’s no indication the Brewers are especially motivated to part with any of the bunch.

The Brewers are exploring trades involving their depth outfielders, report Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. The report lists Isaac Collins and Blake Perkins as the two likeliest candidates to move. Jackson Chourio certainly isn’t going anywhere. Christian Yelich is owed $84.5MM over the next three seasons (including a 2029 option buyout), so they’re unlikely to line up any kind of trade there.

Mets To Sign Jorge Polanco
The Mets and free agent infielder Jorge Polanco have agreed to a two-year contract, The Athletic’s Will Sammon reports (multiple links).  The deal is worth $40MM, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.  Polanco is represented by the Octagon Agency. It’s a big strike for a Mets team that lost Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz to free agency just within the last week, not to mention last month’s trade that sent another longtime Met in Brandon Nimmo to Texas.

While neither Francisco Lindor or Fernando Tatis Jr. are part of the talks, the teams are engaging in trade discussions.

It’s a two-year deal for the 32-year-old Polanco, per Sammon.

Given that the Mets have Marcus Semien at 2B, Polanco looks like a guy New York will plug in as the everyday DH.

Polanco had a .265/.326/.495 slash line with 26 home runs and a 134 OPS+ in 2025.
