i watched hana-bi and sonatine within a couple days a while back and i still cant stop thinking about them, sonatine in particular was quite arresting

That said I am still not super well-versed in Kitano (haven't seen Hanabi yet) but the satire of yakuza tropes lives on in Outrage, and a good 45 minutes of this film feels like practice for Sonatine. Overall I'm not sure what it's trying to do, but it's weirdly mesmerizing and fun.

That said I am still not super well-versed in Kitano (haven't seen Hanabi yet) but the satire of yakuza tropes lives on in Outrage, and a good 45 minutes of this film feels like practice for Sonatine. Overall I'm not sure what it's trying to do, but it's weirdly mesmerizing and fun.

His filmography is strange because there's a lot of rough, violent crime films and a lot of gentle, nostalgic feeling movies. If you want something similar to Sonatine (1993), those are the two best ones to seek out.
