This is the first (and hopefully the last time) I have met with a pink enamelled range during a tour at #QuarryBank #Styal. The guide did an amazing job on a rainy day, but....pink! Really folks, pink!!!

Lisa Haughey had only previously had a handful of minor brushes with the law, and yet she was left a nervous wreck as she faced the all too real prospect of being sent to HMP Styal @liverpoolecho.co.uk

August! August was the month where 2025... started to fall apart, if I'm being perfectly honest, but still. Started strong with the Greatest Gathering, then a few spots across the north of England. (8a/12)

🎄 This week Pact’s team in HMP Styal got this lovely card from one of the women we support through the Visiting Mum programme.

Here's why our team found it so moving... (thread)

Pauper apprentices were 'sold' to factory owners like Samuel Greg at Styal from the 1790s at least. They were indentured until they were 21 years old, and broke the law itif they ran away. Litton Mill was one of the most infamous places of work www.gracesguide.co.uk/Litton_Mill,...
In 1811-12, the Luddites attempted to resist some of the first waves of machine-industrialisation. They were crushed.

20 years later "pauper apprentices" (= orphan children) were being SOLD to factory-owners as cheap labour.

Think on, dear hearts, think on.
Oh no the Governor of the Bank of England compared AI to the Industrial Revolution

5 Julie had the privilege of being interviewed for National Prison Radio this week- a brilliant scheme that runs from Styal Prison that supports the women there as they gain skills, confidence and opportunities in radio production and presenting.

Mauldeth Road [MAU] ✅ (135/138)
Styal Line ✅

Gosh darn it, it's that awful platform surface again that's completely lethal in icy conditions.

Mauldeth Road has a ticket kiosk and step free access. Other than that... Nothing of note. Bit of a dump really.

Heald Green [HDG]

Another one on the Styal Line. Step free, ticket office, all the good stuff.

Much better platform surface than the others I've been to on this line as well.

Heald Green is also perfect for those who like to spot their planes!

Burnage [BNA] ✅ (133/138)

Well I shouldn't have been out today but due to a change of scheduling I've been given some extra days off...

Anyway, Burnage is a step free station on the Styal Line. There's a ticket office here too! Unfortunately it has this shoddy platform surface that can be lethal.
December 11, 2025 at 12:11 PM
Anyway, with that I only have 6 remaining stations.

They're all thankfully confined to the east of Greater Manchester, with three on the Styal Line, one on Crewe - Stockport and two on, maybe surprisingly for some people, the Hope Valley line...

This week, we’re chuffed and excited to be welcoming the legend Julie Hesmondhalgh into our Styal studio 💫

But before she steps between the bars, she is asking YOU to support the very work she is about to experience firsthand: www.prison.radio/donate

A little snapshot into our work at HMP Styal - captured by the wonderful Andy Aitchison 📸

This is exactly what your donations will continue to fund - training, mentoring, and a safe space for women to re-find their voices and develop new skills.

We first met Scout in our radio studio behind the bars of HMP Styal.

Less than two years later, Scout has won numerous industry Gold awards & this week they took home a Rose D’Or 🌹

Help us discover more Scouts in 2026: www.prison.radio/donate

All donations doubled. Thank you.

Old photo: Built in 1784, Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, Cheshire, is at the heart of an early industrial community considered to be of international importance.
The cotton mill and its estate are now in the care of the National Trust, and operated as a museum.
