Reka sat back against one of the wheels of her carriage, watching flames dance across the logs of her fire. They'd stopped in a clearing maybe twenty yards from the road, and the sun was setting. Pilgrims and Guardsmen came and went, running plates to fires or dishes to buckets. She had already eaten another one of Mary's delicious meals; a piece of venison from a deer one of the Guards had managed to down when its herd had bounded across the road, accompanied by boiled and seasoned potatoes. She could smell someone boiling the leftover bones down into stock for a stew tomorrow, and found herself looking forward to it. Now though she stared into the fire, her mind open and focused on the logs. There were four fire spirits, each of them shaped like different kinds of lizards, dashing across and under the coals slowly burning away. Fire spirits were the most fascinating to her. They were incredibly rare in the wild, always needing something else to happen to conjure them. Air spirits were everywhere, even in the darkest reaches of the earth according to some dwarves she'd spoken to. Earth spirits similarly could be anywhere, and even the smallest pond would have a water spirit or two. But fire spirits needed to be brought into existence, by human hands or by a coincidence of nature. And when they were, they were the hardest of any spirit to control. Air spirits needed very little convincing to do anything, and it was in a water spirits' nature to follow a path they were set on. Earth spirits could be a little slow or stubborn, but if you knew where to push you could get them to do what you wanted fairly easily. But fire was always capricious, eternally unpredictable. Right now, surrounded by stones and dug slightly into the ground, Reka's fire pit seemed to be in control. The spirits and their flames were contained, chasing each other across logs and through smoldering embers. They breathed in the cool evening air and exhaled little wisps of smoke that rose up into th… But the control was an illusion. One errant spark floating off to the exact right place would spawn a new fire spirit, and that spirit would consume whatever it landed on. It would grow and Summon more of its brethren, spreading and spreading until they consumed everything in their reach. It would as soon destroy a person as keep them warm, and never be able to tell the difference. She rarely worked with fire spirits. Mostly because she didn't have much cause to in sparring matches, but also because of their nature. Taking a fire spirit into her aura became a tightrope walk, a constant fight for control over herself. The way they affected her mood was more dangerous than the other kinds of spirits, making her impulsive and aggressive in ways she normally wouldn't be. Holding on to an air spirit at the same time only made it worse, though she usually could offset most of it with an earth or water spirit. But that was a delicate balance to strike, drawing on each spirit the perfect amount to offset the others, and the whole time heat pumping through her veins, waiting for her to make the tiniest slip before it could consume her. She'd talked to Arlo about it once long into the night. He described his own magic much the same way, but seemed to revel in that feeling. He gave in to that drive, doubled down on the pushing feeling. He rode his abilities like the wave at the front of a flood, forcing anything weaker than him out of his way and meeting anything else with overwhelming force. She couldn't do that. Maybe it was because her abilities could inflict so much more damage, or because each kind of spirit affected her so differently, but she couldn't imagine giving in like that. What would happen to the spirit whose power she borrowed if she did? Would she consume it completely? Would the spirit control her instead of the other way around? That seemed wrong somehow, like she was taking something beautiful out of the world. No, her power required restraint and judgement…

Blood magic is definitely the most powerful version of the water magic, particularly when done with the blood of a Hjarta. Normally used to open portals to the spirit worlds for mystical quests and faster travels.

He started the march to Elara’s bunk, intent on making her regret being in if she was. But he stopped short. She was in the corridor, standing at the elevator, watching the display flicker from ‘5’ to ‘4’. He smiled wide. “Kid am I glad to see you!” She turned, frown lines creasing her forehead, blue eyes flashing as her lip curled in one corner. “So intimidating,” he said, nearly laughing aloud. She pulled the clean white towel off of her shoulder and thrust it at him, as if warding away an evil spirit. She shook her head, “No Toren, fuck off. I’m under orders. And those orders involve hot water, soap and scrubbing. I can help you later.” Toren raised a hand. “Hate to be the herald of bad tidings Kid, but you’ve been requisitioned for an engineering emergency.” Her sigh was payment enough. One last protest. “Please let me go for a shower.” But it was weak. He had already won. Placing a hand on her shoulder he said, "You're hurting my heart here Kid. I thought we were friends.” The lift door opened. As she sagged, allowing herself to be guided into the lift with a futile “I hate you!” he hit the button for the shuttle bay.
