Thank you to @votealexlee.bsky.social for inviting Norman Wong, descendant of #WongKimArk, to the Assembly Floor. Wong Kim Ark's courage affirmed #birthrightcitizenship for all children regardless of parents' immigration status. Today, Norman & his wife, Maureen, are fighting to protect this right!

Norman Wong has become a persuasive & righteous spokesperson for #BirthrightCitizenship. In a smaller way I too fairly recently discovered a family connection to the issue—because it was my great-grandfather J. And in 1898 my great-grandfather argued #WongKimArk @ SCOTUS, w/ #BirthrightCitizenship as a requirement of the 14th Amendment. He prevailed despite the xenophobia of the era. Now, in the face of Trump's threats & deportations, we must insist on that same argument: oldestvocation.com/2024/01/08/f...

My mom, historian Clarissa Atkinson @oldestvocation.bsky.social, is the great-granddaughter of J. Hubley Ashton, who defended #WongKimArk @ SCOTUS in 1898. She has recently been in touch w/Norman Wong, who is himself the great-grandson of Wong Kim Ark & active in defending #BirthrightCitizenship!

🧵2/ This isn't the first time the lawyers have argued Elk v. Wilkins, holding a Ho-Chunk man wasn't a birthright citizen, means allegiance or consent or something else. They tried it in 1898 in #WongKimArk. #SCOTUS rejected the analogy:

Part of an in-progress series I'm working on. This 40" x 30" is titled Wong Kim Ark v. United States (1898), a court case which established birthright citizenship. For me it's important to reflect on current events in my #paintings!

On Friday, March 28, we gathered in the middle of Chinatown at Wong Kim Ark's birthplace to 1) celebrate his legacy of birthright citizenship and 2) a new resolution that's being introduced into the state legislature to affirm this 14th amendment right!

On this day in 1898, #WongKimArk won a historic Supreme Court ruling that affirmed: if you are born here, you are a citizen.

127 years on, we honor Ark’s victory & stand against Trump’s illegal EO that seeks to strip citizens of this constitutional right.

Tomorrow is the 127th anniversary of the #WongKimArk case. #BirthrightCitizenship is the law of the land, and no EO can undermine a Constitutional right.
Tomorrow, we celebrate the 127th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision, United States v Wong Kim Ark. Much has been discussed about Wong Kim Ark’s legal case, but we know so little about his life.

Even after winning his case, he was forced to re-prove his citizenship again and again. ⬇️
