A couple of years back I was commissioned to paint Akhenaten (an ancient Egyptian pharaoh reigning c. 1353–1336 or 1351–1334 BC, the tenth ruler of the Eighteenth Dynasty), using an image of one of the surviving stone busts to work from. 🧵 1/2

Yeah, I mean, Akhenaten did it differently, but whatever his motivation was (I know this is debated), he was getting a fresh start, away from the power structures of the old religion. And Constantine and his successors-- and even influential bishops before him-- were absolutely after the same thing.

i went to a shabbat service recently where a Rabbi shared a theory some people apparently have that Judaism might have evolved from a rogue priest(s) of Akhenaten who had to get out of Egypt after Akhenaten died and the polytheistic priests retook power.
