M 51, a.k.a. the Whirlpool Galaxy in Canes Venatici, is 31 million light years away. Some of its arms are being distorted by the gravitational attraction of its companion dwarf galaxy NGC 5195 which is the round ball to the left.

Had some help opening up the ol’ LX200 OTA and cleaning the mirrors and corrector plate. After a week of bad weather it’s going to be clear enough tonight to get this beast setup and tuned for galaxy season.

Had some help opening up the ol’ LX200 OTA and cleaning the mirrors and corrector plate. After a week of bad weather it’s going to be clear enough tonight to get this beast setup and tuned for galaxy season.

Tomorrow I plan to get a new 50mm lens for my Canon. First time with a fixed lens. All my others are telephoto. Will have an f/1.8 aperture. Should prove interesting to use in my attempts to capture certain sights. Like the Milky Way for example. 🔭 🧪 #astrophotographt
