If I even expressed so much as an inkling that something was wrong with me in that regard, my parents would immediately dismiss it.” Elias winced. “I know a bit of what that is like.” He wrapped an arm around himself. “My mother was the same way, as well as our priest. Granted, this was a long time ago, but I don’t think that changes much.” With a rueful chuckle, Theodore nodded. “It doesn’t change much at all.” He took a breath before continuing. “At the time, my marriage to my husband, Jerome, was entirely political. He confided in me that he was only attracted to men, and I told him that I never wanted to marry but didn’t know why. So, it was amicable. “It was after the birth of my second daughter that I couldn’t take it anymore. I told Jerome what I was struggling with. While he was not brought up in as wealthy of a home as I was, he had a better understanding of the world and about people that weren’t considered ‘normal.’ “You know. Men that love men, women that love women. Other men like us that weren’t born boys, and vice versa with women. He knew of people that fell into neither bracket, or both, or there were people that loved without regard of a person’s expression. Seeing what I was grappling with, he offered to help me. “That was how I was able to get my tonic and my surgeries. It was thanks to my husband. The girls were still young, and they were able to accept me as their father as much as Jerome was able to so easily not call me his wife anymore. My body was starting to feel like my own…”
