30 volunteers covered 199 bat calls over 5,000 square kilometres of Northern England in 2025. I love them all, they respond with enthusiasm and good humour to enable bats to be given a second chance. Merry Christmas and may all bats stay safely tucked up for the New Year. #lovebats #batcare

Walking round RSPB Dove Stone today and spotted this rather rustic looking 🦇 box!

Almost missed it as I was looking at the fabulous display of fungi on the trunk.

Led a fantastic bat walk on Tuesday for a community group in Godley, Greater Manchester. We picked up common and soprano pips, and myotis species - likely Brandt's or whiskered.

There are 9 recorded species for Greater Manchester. Can you name them?

Had a very batty day with my niece yesterday: drawing bats, painting bats and looking for bats. The common pips didn't disappoint and put on quite a display! You're never too young to start batting! 🦇🖤🦇

Common pips and Daubenton's on the duck pond last night.

Really hard to listen for the Daub's as the pips drown everything out, but looking back at my recordings, I think I can see some calls.

I took my Magenta 5 and EMT2.

South Lancashire Bat Group has been surveying millponds in Bury for about 30 years. Last night marked the end of this year's surveying (we got it done in a record 5 nights). Lots of common pips on this pond and Daubenton's on many of the others. 🦇🖤🦇

Another evening in the garden with the bat detector.

Been out three times this week and this little common pip seems to follow the same pattern each night - feeds in our garden for about 30 minutes shortly after sunset then disappears off to hunt somewhere else. 🦇🖤🦇

🦇 June is here!

Female bats usually give birth to a single baby, called a pup, which they feed on their milk. Young bats are very small (less than an inch) and pink with little to no fur. They will soon grow a thin, slightly grey fur.

Night scented flowers are a great way to encourage moths, which are a tasty snack for many bats here in the UK. I was looking for 'night-scented stocks' but the best my garden centre could do was 'night-scented phlox'! Hopefully, they will also be popular with the moths!
