Been trying to reduce some anxiety today via 20 rep breathing squats and bass guitar and CDDA, definitely helping but not as much as I'd like.

In souls games, a good way of getting better at a boss is to simply go in and not attack, just try to survive in the boss room as long as possible.

Many minutes of seeing its behaviour and learning openings for heals and attacks, etc.

Same applies for CDDA and Zomboid.

In Dark Souls, Zomboid, CDDA, etc, the more skilled the player the more desperately they try to extend the feel of the early game. The goal is to make it always feel like the early game, where everything is difficult and precarious and everything is life and death.

It's interesting that CDDA used to have a point buy character creation system, but gave it up because it was too gamey: people simply learned a meta of what traits don't matter, what traits to minmax, etc.

In all these games, Dark Souls to CDDA, they are the ones changing the difficulty to match their frustration threshold.

The games make it extremely easy to play them much, much, much harder than they normally are, even without modding them.

Ms Reynolds stated that she was not afforded the opportunity to defend herself in the decision for: an Act of Grace Payment; or, one under the CDDA Scheme. These administrative decisions are made by the Minister/Delegate and follow a set, due process. As I understand it, they are outside her remit.

You can look at the sheer number of items and components and tools and weapons in Cataclysm, a *hell* of lot of which you are able to build and mcguyver together.

CDDA: because becoming a cyborg catgirl is *much* easier to do if you've got a horrifying extradimensional entity keeping your cells from dissolving
December 9, 2025 at 5:45 AM
Gonna mod in a background in CDDA called "squat monster" and it makes your character's ass incredibly powerful. Your glutes could effortlessly take down a zombie hulk, etc as long as you can get situated properly.

Part of the lore of CDDA is that you are already infected with the Blob, which is why you heal so fast.

It's also kind of why you can mutate into a catgirl: mutations that would have killed you simply don't. The process of becoming a catgirl would be very lethal and very excruciating otherwise.

Worm Girl's launch of her CDDA fork on steam from a few months ago.

CDDA: the Last Generation is basically 0.D/0.E but updated with some crunch: robots and CBM's galore, no portal storms or Exodii, pockets, etc

A really good Souls player can just hang out in a boss room as long as they want, or a CDDA/Zomboid player go from one end of the map to the other, without ever needing to hit anything.

A brand new player can babystep gradually toward doing that, progressively overloading how long they can survive

It's fun to imagine how many people are right now playing CDDA on Linux, as a result of the entire industry slamming its dick in a car door

Article interviewing someone who is happily playing Portal or CDDA etc, trying as hard as possible to not include their quote that they absolutely can't afford to upgrade their system let alone buy a new computer
December 5, 2025 at 9:30 AM
It's interesting comparing this to CDDA.

CDDA is open source, anyone who wants anything can just mod it themselves. Every possible complaint can be countered with "add it yourself buddy"

And the reaction has been for 15 years: the game is dying, the devs are killing the game
December 8, 2025 at 10:19 PM
Note: I have a 6+ year old dell optiplex what has 16gb ram and integrated graphics and an SSD, running Linux Mint. Cost like $120 at the time

It plays Project Zomboid and Rimworld and CDDA and Dwarf Fortress and Portal 1/2 and Salt and Sanctuary and Hollow Knight perfectly fine with Steam's Proton.
Since genAI has completely fucked the market for home computers, I guarantee there'll be an article complaining that people are playing older and less resource-intensive games and how this is killing the AAA gaming industry
December 5, 2025 at 3:26 PM
CDDA is even more mod friendly, you can literally change anything you want about it, fork the hell out of it.

And the result is like, 15 years of furious flame war.
December 8, 2025 at 10:22 PM
It's also is a good enough fork that I was happy to throw six bucks at it on Steam, rather than the $20 for CDDA

Just installed CDDA 0.H, the latest stable. Haven't touched CDDA in a very long while, so odds are most of the game will be *wildly* different than I remember it being.

Last version I'd played was 0.F, can't remember if pockets were in that one.

in zomboid it's way easier to not incentivize becoming a minmax jack of all trades due to the focus and ease of multiplayer. that really is what sets zomboid apart.

in cdda there is still a preferred way to play early due to the commitment to realism (night raids, traps, arson and stealth) tho
December 5, 2025 at 9:08 PM
I've been super critical of this type of survival game (I call them rust-likes) but they can be done well.
I do feel like they will always be a little worse than the more intensive survival games a la vintage story, zomboid, CDDA, etc. but that feeling is mostly because I value those traits more
having played it for 10 hours today i can reccomend abiotic factor as a survival game as it is not just slop
November 26, 2025 at 4:48 AM
But it being so sample-driven is also what lends it to immediate obsolescence. CDDA makes it so that you no longer have to sample or "mimic" instruments anymore, after all, so that strength is made immediately irrelevant just a few years later.
