It's interesting that CDDA used to have a point buy character creation system, but gave it up because it was too gamey: people simply learned a meta of what traits don't matter, what traits to minmax, etc.

It plays Project Zomboid and Rimworld and CDDA and Dwarf Fortress and Portal 1/2 and Salt and Sanctuary and Hollow Knight perfectly fine with Steam's Proton.

in cdda there is still a preferred way to play early due to the commitment to realism (night raids, traps, arson and stealth) tho

I do feel like they will always be a little worse than the more intensive survival games a la vintage story, zomboid, CDDA, etc. but that feeling is mostly because I value those traits more
