Handwritten prayers to the land in charred heather. The charcoal is collected from moorland in Yorkshire which is rotationally burned for grouse shooting.

Layers of handwriting at different angles in charcoal. The words are illegible, written over each other to form an abstract texture. The writing forms a geometric shape to the far left of the paper leaving the right hand side untouched. The charcoal is brown tinged and blacky grey, in different textures and thicknesses. The shape refers to the shape of scorched ground where the heather was found by the artist in North Yorkshire UK. Heather burning is an ecologically destructive moorland practice that encourages new shoots of heather to grow to feed grouse, where they are hunted for sport. The practice has series environmental consequences for habitats, peat erosion, carbon storage and more.
