You've prompted a long-buried memory. Not only was I unfamiliar with Chauvelin and the Scarlet Pimpernel, but it was also in this book that I first encountered the name Moriarty.

Exception, as always, is Fáelán (he's always the odd one out w). I know that his inspirations are Hoshigumi 2006 Scarlet Pimpernel Chauvelin and Discworld Sam Vimes.

The Scarlet Pimpernel starring Jonathan Bailey as both Percy and Chauvelin. 💸💸💸

Thinking about her (Yuzuki Reon as Chauvelin)

Why is Sir Percy Blakeney played by Tim Curry in this book?

Stop scrolling and post two characters who bring you happiness.

Like a good Chauvelin-based character, Fáelán is enraptured by the guillotine. He loves that it’s quick, efficient, can’t be moved by money or rank.

HAVE I MENTIONED HE’S STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL? Fáelán is stunningly beautiful. His main physical inspiration is Yuzuki Reon as Chauvelin. I don’t have any art of him, but imagine Chie with grey eyes and the Chauvelin wig and that’s basically him

You haven’t met Fáelán. He’s from a Scarlet Pimpernel-inspired Black Jewels rp which I re-read on the train and it’s honestly really good

Fáelán is best described as “Chauvelin if he were also Sam Vimes” the man just wants to prevent war and solve crimes and hasn’t had a good night’s sleep in years

“Alas, a moment was all I could spare” is burned into my brain IT’S FUN

Has kt seen the 2008 Takarazuka production? :D That show also understands the assignment

Also my best girl Chie is Chauvelin

'But Chauvelin did not flinch beneath that gaze which could make every cheek in France blanch with unnamed terror, and after that slight moment of hesitation Robespierre said quietly: “You shall have the complete power of a military dictator in every town or borough of France which you may visit.”'

Allow me to plug @genevievecogman.bsky.social's ridiculously fun fantasy take on the story, the Scarlet Revolution series. Though nothing beats the ludicrously loveable 1982 TV movie version with Ian McKellen as Chauvelin. It's unspeakably silly and absolutely perfect. youtu.be/i7VTXh5lKqg?...

Apologies to everyone involved, but no production of Elisabeth das Musical will delight me as much as the Takarazuka productions! Especially the 2002 Hanagumi one, that was my first Takarazuka!

Scarlet Pimpernel? Broadway doesn't have Yuzuki Reon as Chauvelin! Takarazuka wins again!

All great but his Chauvelin in "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is my favorite.

Also I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by Rafael Sabatini but especially THE NUPTIALS OF CORBAL (1927) in which a pair of young aristos outmatch a Chauvelin-esque villain in Revolutionary France:
The Nuptials of Corbal
Half gentleman and half valet, half wolf and half fox, Citizen Chauvinère enters the prison to hear the list of the condemned read to the waiting nobles. Shrinking away from the jailers, Cléonie de Mo...

So who's his Chauvelin? (Aside from the obvious - who I actually think wouldn't fit)

Today's somewhat-deranged note while out walking, re: current WIP:

The Scarlet Pimpernel. Can't have the romance without Jacobin Gandalf.

Brooding as Chauvelin in The Scarlet Pimpernel

This also means Marguerite would be bisexual which adds an extra layer to the scenes where Percy sees Marguerite and chauvelin in the rose garden together, and later when Marguerite confesses her past to the Pimpernel at the ball.

Thinking in the shower as I so often do about how they should revive the musical of the scarlet pimpernel, but write Chauvelin as a woman, and that way a woman gets to sing the absolute bangers, “where’s the girl,” “Falcon in the dive” and of course, “Madame guillotine”.

Snowbear:

vala was militia, this world's version of first responder/cop with an emphasis on stopping faction warfare, and niw she's leader of a faction so...

regency thing:

both ex spies so i guess the opposite would be chauvelin types?

tobias woukd be miserable, tess would be scarily good.
Hello #ComJunity Writers! If your characters already run a business, how would they do in the opposite industry?
