🌍 Raising Awareness for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) 🌍 Many may not fully grasp the complexity of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), but it is crucial to break down common misconceptions. At first glance, the symptoms— intense fatigue, pain, insomnia, cognitive deficits, dyspnea, gastrointestinal issues, multiple hypersensitivities with normal routine exams — seem nonspecific and lead to misunderstandings. One key to mastering our understanding of ME lies in recognizing Post-exertional Malaise (PEM). Unlike many conditions where the impact of exertion is immediate, PEM entails an astonishing delay—often up to 72 hours—before exacerbation occurs. This results in a scenario where patients may feel relatively fine during assessments, only to endure significant deterioration later. Consequently, their experiences may be dismissed as exaggeration, leading to a daunting challenge in obtaining a proper diagnosis. As we stand in 2025, it's been 70 years since the first publication about ME under this name after a severe outbreak at a hospital in London. Furthermore, it has been 56 years since ME was classified by the WHO as a neurological condition, yet the medical community still struggles to adequately address the needs of ME patients. Alarmingly, as many as 10% of Long COVID patients meet the diagnostic criteria for ME — a public health concern that cannot be overlooked. We must advocate for our communities, highlight these long-ignored diagnoses, and ensure that our healthcare systems evolve to support those who endure the impact of ME. It is incumbent on us to join together as professionals to raise awareness, push for research, and adequately support ME patients. Together, let's amplify this message and elevate our understanding! #MEAwareness #ChronicFatigue #LongCovid #PostExertionalMalaise #HealthcareAdvocacy
