This is the result of researchers from the group Oceanic Acoustics at the Alfred Wegener Institute, who recorded the calls of Greenland whales with underwater recorders and evaluated them using artificial intelligence. They are now publishing their study on the habitat use of the Greenland whale as a function of the sea ice cover in the journal Scientific Reports. If Greenland whales call a place that is particularly varied and diverse, it is very likely that it is a reproduction area. The species occurs exclusively in the Arctic Ocean, so it is endemic there. In the expanses of the partly ice-covered Arctic Ocean, researchers from the Oceanic Acoustics Group at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) have installed so-called hydrophones that record underwater sounds. In this way, they can record the calls of the animals in remote regions without being on site themselves - and can draw conclusions about the occurrence and behavior based on the acoustic data. (Photo: Ocean Acoustics Group - AWI OZA ) In the journal Scientific Reports, a team led by first author Marlene Meister now publishes a study on the Greenland whale population around Spitsbergen. This population was massively hunted during times of commercial whales, so that their population decreased from an estimated 33,000 to 65,000 animals to only a few hundred individuals. Although the Spitsbergen population has been under protection since the 1930s, it has so far shown no clear signs of recovery. Greenland whales are strongly threatened by the decline of the Arctic sea ice, as this is an important habitat for them: Here they find more food and protection from hunting orcas. "If the ice disappears, the population loses a central habitat," says AWI biologist Marlene Meister. "It is probably hardly possible for the animals to move further north because they only find very limited food there." At the same time, the Arctic Ocean is more accessible for shipping due to the dwindling ice. This in turn increases the risk that habitats will be polluted by noise or oil or that whales will collide with ships. In order to better assess the effects of this habitat loss, the researchers paid particular attention to the occurrence and behavior of Greenland whales in areas with different sea conditions. "Observations show that the Spitsbergen population is increasingly in the sea ice, from the ice edge to several hundred kilometers in the pack ice, where openings in the sea ice serve as breathing holes for the animals," says Marlene Meister. Therefore, the Oceanic Acoustics team examined two very different regions in the Fram Strait (the waterway between Greenland and Spitzbergen): Spectrogram for songs of Greenland whales. (Photo: Ocean Acoustics Group - AWI OZA )The researchers manually divided the Greenland whale song into individual songs (i.e. into sections that had high similarities) and analyzed their temporal occurrence in connection with the sea conditions. Northwest of Spitsbergen, a total of twelve different songs could be detected, each of which perpened over several days to weeks. Starting in October, the number of different songs per month increased and peaked in February with eight different songs. One possible explanation is that in February more animals were present in the region and each produced different songs, so that the song diversity increased. It is also conceivable that individual animals sang more diversely in February, which could give them a reproductive advantage, for example when females prefer those males who have a particularly large song repertoire. The increase in Song variety coincided with a regional decline in sea ice in a border region of the area investigated. In December, the recorder was under the sea ice up to 200 kilometers from the sea ice edge, but in February it was directly on the ice edge after the ice retreated. "The close connection between song diversity and distance to the ice edge was a surprising result for us," says Marlene Meister. In the second examined, ice-free region, there were only calls and no songs. The AWI biologist explains: "Greenland whales have also regularly stayed in the ice-free eastern Framstraße, but the reason for their presence is still open. It is possible that the animals only cross the area and call to keep in touch with each other. The fact that we have not detected any songs there also speaks against the fact that it is a reproductive area. Recorder positions northwest of Svalbard and in Fram Strait. Bathymetry map was generated in PyGMT v0.9.031 using the SRTM15 + V2.6 CNN Performance We trained two CNNs: one for data from northwest of Svalbard (CNN_No) and one for data from eastern and central Fram Strait (CNN_Ea_Ce). CNN_No achieved an overall validation performance of 81% sensitivity and a 0.7% false-positive rate, while CNN_Ea_Ce reached 83% sensitivity with a 0.7% false-positive rate for the validation dataset. Performance evaluation for individual recorders on an hourly basis showed reliable results, with sensitivity ≥ 80% and false-positive rates ≤ 1% after partial false-positive control (manual review of detections outside the typical bowhead whale calling period in winter and spring) for most recorders. Only one recorder (ARKF04-15_SV1026) showed decreased sensitivity (75%), likely due to a limited amount of available data with bowhead whale acoustic presence, which hindered a reliable performance evaluation. Performance values for individual recorders, along with a detailed description of CNN development, application, and performance evaluation, are provided in the Methods section. Acoustic presence Bowhead whales were detected at all locations and during all deployment years between autumn and spring (Figs. 2, 3). Acoustic data from the 2022/2023 deployment period revealed site-specific differences in bowhead whale acoustic presence patterns between northwest of Svalbard and eastern Fram Strait (Fig. 2). Northwest of Svalbard, sporadic vocalizations were first detected on September 21st, followed by continuous acoustic presence from October through April. Acoustic presence was generally high, reaching up to 24 h per day, though notable declines occurred in late October to early November, in March, and acoustic presence then ceased in late April. In total, this recorder documented 3,035 h of bowhead whale acoustic presence across 182 days.
