A reminder of an upcoming deadline. Come join us in Vienna to talk about carbonate diagenesis. ⚒️
Working on #diagenesis; be it #modelling, #lab studies or on #ancient #carbonates or mixed #siliciclastic systems?
Then, submit an #abstract to #EGU26 for SSP3.9: #Carbonate #Diagenesis by January 15.

ICYMI: Diagenesis in corals; syntaxial cements as evidence for post-mortem skeletal thickenings
Diagenesis in corals; syntaxial cements as evidence for post-mortem skeletal thickenings
Syntaxial cements in Scleractinian corals and their growth in optical continuity with the skeletal carbonate fibres combined with simultaneous recrystallization allow a comparison with Palaeozoic corals. Septal thickenings are due to cement...

I’ve been waiting for something like this to come along! One for the bone diagenesis nerds. Preprint comparing patterns or bacterial bioerosion in ancient bones with metagenomic analysis of associated microbiomes. More diverse microbiomes in well-preserved bone.

Hmm. Traditional provenance isotopes (eg Sr) probably not great for such fine grained differences. But thinking about diagenesis at the micro/trace element level might be useful. Look for marker trace elements from the different contexts using mass spectrometry or IR spectroscopy.

It would be so sad if it was just diagenesis, I refuse to believe it.

If you are thinking about submitting anything to #EGU26 on diagensis or reactions in the sediment, consider our session under @egu-ssp.bsky.social (SSP3.9), where we ask:
What if the most important setting for carbonate diagenesis is the first few meters below the seafloor? ⚒️

Surface weathering still ends up with different minerals than those formed during diagenesis/lithification, though I don't have the experience with sedimentary petrology to get into that.
November 20, 2025 at 1:45 AM
Mineralization during lithification/diagenesis for sedimentary rocks can happen along the original layering, and metamorphism tends to segregate out minerals into foliation/cleavage planes. These differences can also form pathways for fluids (which can include hydrocarbons).
