“Ahead of the rising sun
I saw the birds dance
through the crisp morning air
with the sky all aglow
singing their songs
healing my nighttime despair”

A slow start over the village green with a sign and railings next to a stream that goes under the road junction. Trees appearing from the mist.

It’s still mild in our Surrey village and snow is rare these days but when it comes the fields near our house are wondrous with the old Oaks casting black shadows on the whiteness.

Not sure how wild any of these are as I suspect somebody scattered the seed in a field near a local gate by a path. Anyway, it’s the thought that counts. I think we have a Poppy, Plains Coreopsis, Scorpionweed Borage, Hogweed and possibly Toadflax.

Sunrise over a hill near our village behind an Oak plus two birds in a clear blue sky. The fields, covered in dew are floodlit by the morning light.

A stroll across the fields to the millpond to see an old friend - the Liquidambar tree standing in a neighbour’s garden that puts on a ridiculously colourful free show each autumn.

Another glorious sky over our village captured from the back bedroom window while hoping not to capture my death of cold as the temperature outside plummeted overnight and we had a first frost. I fear the garden has suffered.

After yesterday’s sparkling frosts and blue skies it was early-morning mists and grey skies to begin the week.

Low water in the village millpond, which is covered in green weed but the purple Loosestrife surrounding its banks is in full flower.

Weekend weather … grey, dank and chilly … but sheep graze in the meadow at the top of the village near a mighty oak as they have done for centuries unaware of world affairs. Lucky.

I am a fox terrier man but do have a soft spot for felines and the one I saw lounging in the doorway of a neighbour’s cottage this morning soaking up the sun was such a beauty I had to share.

A swiftish walk to the next village this morning as the thermometer struggled to get above zero but the snowdrops near the parish church hinted at warmer days to come.

The Brontë sisters’ hometown was my destination for Christmas Day this year.

I think getting in a little tourism on Christmas will be my new expat tradition.

We don’t get out much but visiting a nearby village for a monthly Parkinson’s group coffee morning we passed the parish church and had to stop to photograph the amazing plum blossom outside. What an uplifting sight on a Monday morning.

A still from a recent shoot in the village of Roydon, Essex.

Located west of Harlow, Roydon was recorded in the Domesday book of 1086. You can see St Peters Church, dating from the Middle Ages. Full video coming soon!

A few days of sun and warmth has brought out the Snake’s Head Fritillaries outside the local church among the daffodils - like most other blooms, much later than usual and still quite sparse. Rain is forecast.

A walk around our village just after sunrise. Every day I get a different view when climbing to the top of the hill and looking back down over the fields. Today they were shrouded in mist after a clear night.

At the end of a tediously grey and chilly week the sun came out today and gave us more hours of daylight than we have enjoyed this year -almost 10 hours. Not expecting it to last but surely Spring must be near. Goodnight.

An oak standing at the entrance to the parish church looks rather sinister now but in a few months will be gloriously green again.
