Charming but still not memorable. English Touring Opera tackeld Il mondo...: deadly dull. I enjoyed La fedelta... but it was my first visit to Glyndebourne, as a teenager, and of course I lapped up the experience. The conductor was a young Simon Rattle.

Theodora (Händel)
Again, I like many versions, but especially attached to the first one I saw on youtube (and then on DVD), Glyndebourne 1996. This one I discovered last year and I love that version too.

I’ve always fancied doing this for my Christmas dinner, but I’m used to the attempted adoption thing when happily picnicking alone at Glyndebourne, and… well, I don’t want to ruin my own and somebody else’s Christmas by having to tell people to get lost.

I found the Glyndebourne Parsifal really thought-provoking, though some of it absolutely didn’t make sense. Agree wholeheartedly re that fab Falstaff revival (saw last show of the run with the excellent cover on in the title role). And as for Last Days… I’m seeing it on the “last day” of this year.

#News Francesco Piccoli, the Veronese tenor who performed at La Scala and major opera houses in Vienna, Munich, Paris and Glyndebourne, has died at 66. Verona’s superintendent Cecilia Gasdia remembered him as “humble and special” and widely respected. #Opera #Italy

It feels like the winter equivalent of going to Glyndebourne on public transport.

Most agreeable surprise
= The Cunning little Vixen (RCM) – Improbably classy student production
= La bohème (Glyndebourne) – A riot of symbols that I missed first time round

Embarrassment of the year
The Nine Jewelled Deer (Luma, Arles) – Peter Sellars on autopilot with precious little to say

4/x

Director of the year
Jetske Mijnssen for La Calisto (Aix) & Ariodante (RBO) though not, alas, for her Glyndebourne Parsifal.

Revival of the year
= Last Days (RBO) – Oliver Leith again
= Falstaff (Glyndebourne) – an outstanding Richard Jones production that’s never looked better

3/x

"...unclear as to how and why decisions were taken in the last round to cut the English National Opera and the touring grants for the Welsh National Opera and Glyndebourne at the same time. It is difficult to understand how careful consideration of all the relevant factors was given."

"We are heartened to read of the “overwhelming” backing for the principles - of excellence and access - that underpin our strategy, Let’s Create." Um, I think ACE may have read the report having left their specs at home...
Boom! "The Arts Council should replace Let's Create"

Yes, just couldn't remember the name. We stayed there once during a Glyndebourne season. Rather noisy because of a wedding reception...
