This sympathetic, but far superior cover version is probably the greatest compliment we've ever been paid. Properly in debt to the terrific @assistantband.bsky.social 💖

#5debutalbums8084

The 1st (and only?) Lion Youth LP may not hit the heights of these two non-album singles (also John Rubie-produced) but it really should be better known.

It eschews the politics for much more of a lovers’ vibe (better showcasing the sweetness of his voice!)
Photograph of Lion Youth "Love Comes & Goes" vinyl LP, on Virgo Stomach VGLP 001, produced by John Rubie.

Front cover just has artist name and title with photograph of Lion Youth (aka Clarence Williamson) sitting on his sofa with his bass guitar.

It seems hard to find much information about Lion Youth and anything he did after about 1983! It does appear that he was indeed young, maybe still a teenager on most of his releases. Photograph of two Lion Youth 12"s on Virgo Stomach: "Rat A Cut Bottle" (VG 104) and "Three Million On The Dole" (VG 013).

Both produced, like the “Love Comes And Goes” album, by John Rubie.

Apologies for poor quality photos!

You're very welcome.

The fact that HMV and Tower Records in central London devoted extensive and presumably loss-making space to obscure indie 7"s, import CDs and random white label grime 12"s and mixtapes was a big part of me learning to love this city in my younger days!

Bouquet completism!

Track on 5-band, train-themed flexi on the Pillarbox Red label, 69p plus SAE. Insert included invitation to buy the Bouquet 7" for £1.60. Miss those days.
Photo of 5-track v/a flexidisc on Pillarbox Red (POST 4), "Searching For The Blake Hall".

Songs by the Kensingtons ("Intercity Baby" - remember buying a tape off them at a Sarah gig), the Croxley Green ("Goodbye Westbourne Park"), the Marigolds ("For All Time"), the Open Window ("Down The Tube") and Bouquet ("Magic Train").

5 train-themed songs amid concern about the closing down of stations like Blake Hall (formerly on the Central Line). Had an insert giving contact details for the Railway Development Society.

Photo also includes folded insert giving details of other Pillarbox Red releases by the Kensingtons, our labelmates Southville (the legendary "Looking From A Hilltop" 7") and others. Photo of extract from cover and insert of 5-track v/a flexidisc on Pillarbox Red (POST 4), "Searching For The Blake Hall".

Just tripped across this omission from that montage! Lovely single, this was 🤩

Well worth the £3.99 that I see HMV Oxford Street charged me at the time.
Photograph of Baptiste's terrific "Kissing With Your Eyes Open" 7"single (Linear Records LINE05), which had "A Worthy Grudge Is A Beautiful Thing" on the other side.

"All songs written by Baptiste...

Photography: Tony Harris"

No text on front cover, just a black and white photograph from behind of a boy sitting on a plastic chair looking out onto the central London skyline featuring St Paul's Cathedral and plenty of cranes. Not actually dissimilar to the view from my office window...

Quite agree, Javi! It’s an excellent song.

Harper Lee embraced new levels of miserabilism at times but still often made me feel like I was in the presence of genius.

1000%. I was obsessed with Brighter, too. My housemate had those singles, which led in part to us seeing them play…

I did see Rachel play with Fosca a few times, later on.

Six months ago, I released ‘Swept Away’. Thanks so much to everyone who’s listened to the songs!

Rosy Overdrive called it “delicately beautiful” and Janglepophub said it’s “indie-pop brilliance”. 😀

Please have a listen on Spotify or Bandcamp:

Yes (controversially high SR score there?)

I have a G500/Assistant one, but I’m saving that up.

I know, right? And we just thought they were (briefly) a perfect singles band.

I have more recently asked them if they had any appetite for a greatest hits retrospective. They didn’t!

some Secret Shine sevens x
Pic of four Secret Shine 7" singles:

Secret Shine "Unbearable" / "My Only Friend" (A Turntable Friend TURN 07)

Secret Shine "After Years" (Sarah 53)

Secret Shine "Ephemeral" (Sarah 61)

Secret Shine "Each Time" / "Anything About Me" (Dreams Never End 1)
therosslyns.bsky.social
Brilliant choice. "Unbearable" may still be in my all-time top 5 Secret Shine songs!

The "one band in Bristol" taunt on the sleeve (against Tramway, I imagine, post-Panda Pops?) riffs on the “only one team in Bristol” chant from Bristol City fans at the time, with Rovers being exiled in Twerton⚽

It’s on K Records which is always a good sign and quite the feather in the cap.

Yes, I’m sorry I missed Josie play down here a few days ago!
therosslyns.bsky.social
Yes! As you know I loved seeing the Cords (on Sept 26, natch) but for me the Cub/Tiger Trap comparisons sit better with the Josie record, which is another absolute belter.
therosslyns.bsky.social
Fantastic tune.

Pretty sure that earlier 7" inserts trailed SARAH 22 as "Horseriding" (which became the B-side), so presumably this cracker of a song appeared at some point between the planning stage and sending the tapes to the pressing plant!

Imagine someone saying "that *has* to be an A side"

just wanted to say the gig was an expectedly great one, from a band who’ve always meant a lot.

Managed to only well up during “Sure to see” and “Hay fever”. Oh, and “Cut”.

Thank you

Next up from Slow Country will be final single from ‘You Still Believe In Me’ backed with two previously unreleased tracks, coming Oct 10. Thanks to all for support. A few irons in the fire for next steps after this… As things stand, next 2 albums already recorded… but maybe some surprises in store…

Fingers crossed. They’re playing the same room again tomorrow night but I think it’s just about sold out…
therosslyns.bsky.social
Saw them tonight, Jonathan, in the same upstairs room I saw Sportique 25 years ago!

It felt like a front room gig - the best, most intimate kind of show.
therosslyns.bsky.social
Dang, that’s a better epithet for LDoR’s plaintive songcraft.

Viva regional differences, though!
