A novel Mediterranean diet-inspired supplement reduces hippocampal amyloid deposits and microglial activation through the modulation of the microbiota gut-brain axis in 5xFAD mice
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is projected to increase in prevalence, heightening the need for strategies to alleviate its neuropathological burden. The bioactive constituents of a Mediterranean-style d...

If there is a cell where microtubules are important for shaping and maintaining morphology and trafficking, it's the neuron. So we set up to assess microtubule turnover and the existence of in-lattice insertion in the best studied model of neuronal polarization - hippocampal neurons in culture 🧵 3/9

🚨The Neurocyto lab is branching out in our latest preprint! We used tubulin microinjection to directly visualize microtubule turnover in developing hippocampal neurons, demonstrating the presence of in-lattice repair and a selective stabilization in the nascent axon. Check below, or read on 🧵 1/9
Direct labeling of microtubule turnover reveals in-lattice repair and stabilization patterns in developing neurons
The microtubule cytoskeleton is the backbone of neuronal morphogenesis, driving the development of the dendrites and axon, and supporting trafficking to distant compartments. How neuronal microtubules...

I urge you to look further into this, because no, you're wrong; hippocampal function *does* deteriorate when information is decoupled from spatial orientation and other sensory inputs. This is a major reason why mnemonic devices like the Memory Palace work so well.

However, @mmonzel.bsky.social et al. (2024) [see below] found reduced hippocampal activity during autobiographical memory retrival in aphantasics, which supports the memory impairment hypothesis. That should be the end of it, right? Well... 3/8

Hippocampal-occipital connectivity reflects autobiographical memory deficits in aphantasia
The autobiographical memory deficits seen in aphantasia are reflected by altered activation and connectivity patterns of the hippocampus and occipital cortex, corroborating the strong link between memory and mental imagery.

-Pro-inflammatory cytokines interfere with synaptic plasticity, including long-term potentiation & long-term depression which are essential for learning and memory
- Chronic inflammation negatively affects hippocampal neurogenesis, further impairing cognitive processes across the lifespan

Can concur. I have severe hippocampal atrophy. SSA is denying applications for disability due to excessive numbers. Even with MRI proof from Mayo, I have to wait for a court hearing.

Chronic elevation of IL-6 is an independent risk factor for the "brain fog," depression, and fatigue typical of LC. High IL-6 levels in the CSF are strongly associated with impaired hippocampal neurogenesis & altered synaptic function.
