Pineapples are a Chinese New Year 🧧 symbol as they are "ong lai" in Hokkien (similar in Cantonese) which sounds like 旺来 "prosperity come".

I was born in Hong Kong and identify as Chinese. We left when CCP took over and moved to Singapore. Then I came to US. I grew up speaking Cantonese and some Hokkien then Singaporean English Singlish and Malay. Like you my heart has two homes.

some communities aren't chinese but colonized and influenced by. you need stop pushing for "chinese new year" if that's the case. if i catch you only loud about mandarin but silent in cantonese, hokkien, hakka teochew and the rest, gtfo. idc abt putong hua.

Gave 我 的 中文 老师 - my Mandarin teacher - a red envelope yesterday evening. Called ang pow in Malaysian Hokkien Chinese. Elders give to younger generations. I remember all the ladies in Malacca playing mahjong & gambling. he food! The snacks! TNew Years went on for a week. Proper order.

Having a multilingual family gets interesting during lunar new year visiting.

Just one visit and I hear English, Cantonese, mandarin, Malay, Hokkien and teochew. My brain is on overdrive translating them in real time. 🫨

Like yes, they're tiger furries, but their names are Chinese, they speak equivalents of Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien, they wear traditional Chinese clothing and they're in a wuxia setting inspired by my lived experience as a Chinese-Taiwanese American, they're Chinese-Taiwanese American

Really?? I've not been in the US in decades but I never heard Hokkien in any of the Chinatowns I visited (Philadelphia, New York, LA, San Francisco, Chicago)!
