I don’t think it’s obvious! The alarm bell was HTlGI giving Curtis Yarvin a big platform last summer, but it doesn’t read as a happy line up this year

@carolecadwalla.bsky.social Guess who’s headlining @ How The Light Gets In (HTLGI) festival @ Hay-on-Wye 2026! Reforms big buddy James Orr. I’ve told them I shan’t be going. I’m not going to fund the likes of him. Next u know they will be inviting Nigel & Paul.

You did?? Oh, I missed you then - that's a little bit the same vibe as HTLGI - high level talks about real issues, but I suppose because it's free of charge, it's more relaxed and less, well dare I say, less posh...
I'm so glad you went - would be amazing to get more international speakers! 🙌🙌❤️

The section of the HTLGI website listing corporate partnerships is interesting.

Alastair Campbell interviewed Neil at the HTLGI Festival last weekend.
I was in the audience, I have to say the mans' still got it…
"You end in the grotesque chaos of a Labour council - a Labour council! - hiring taxis to scuttle round a city, handing out redundancy notices to its own workers!"

40 years on, I joined @ppfideas.bsky.social to discuss Neil Kinnock's blistering assault on Militant.

I’m unaware of a single philosopher that dropped out of presenting at HTLGI London. Great job sharing the stage with Curtis Yarvin, everyone. Yay. You did it.
I’m still stuck on the How The Lights Get In festival lineup, which includes a physicist that lost her mind, an effective altruist huckster, the philosophy huckster, a fascist that advocates chattel slavery, Penrose’s corpse, as many shite UK politicians as possible, and Terry Eagleton (?)

he was at the one in Hay too, along with Tice. HTLGI can go fuck themselves

@dansperber.bsky.social not sure if you're aware, but the upcoming event HTLGI London you're scheduled to present at has top billing for the pro-slavery fascist Curtis Yarvin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_...

Gonna re-up this because I still can’t stop thinking about how insane HTLGI is and how the ‘world’s largest philosophy & music festival’ was for years obviously a reputation laundering machine for right-wing extremists and now it’s got a fascist headlining it

Are you still planning on participating this year? No judgment and not out to ‘cancel’ you; just know that you still can make a choice. You’re too good for HTLGI.
August 23, 2025 at 8:13 AM
Not sure I’d accept the over the top description of HTLGI but they’re certainly making bad decisions about how to be edgy, controversial, relevant. Figures from both sides of the political divide have been questionable but agree, this is a new low. Expecting audience protests as there were with Tice
August 23, 2025 at 8:08 AM
Again, I really don’t think you understand the way HTLGI works. Nazis are not going to gravitate to a place filled with quantum physicists and compatibilist philosophers…
August 21, 2025 at 2:20 PM
HTLGI is great for all the left wing intellectuals that collect right-wing intellectuals out there. People I’ve never even heard of and people like Chris are ‘oh yeah that absolute weirdo, I know that freak, yeah… them’
August 21, 2025 at 1:48 PM
That’s a great and instructive example, but it’s not a good analogy for something like HTLGI, which has a clear and curated focus on science and philosophy.
August 21, 2025 at 1:44 PM
Tice was definitely confronted at HTLGI. And audience questions highly critical.
August 21, 2025 at 1:35 PM
Since that’s clearly not what happens at HTLGI (who have always had a plurality of speakers) your theory doesn’t hold water. The alternative is to have a festival where only ideas that don’t upset anyone are allowed.
August 21, 2025 at 1:20 PM
Well, HTLGI also had Mary Trump, Diane Abbott, Sheila Jasanoff…
August 21, 2025 at 12:49 PM
Hi Joanna Moncrieff, are you aware the infamous fascist and open racist Curtis Yarvin is also participating in the HTLGI festival? He even received prominant billing for the event en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_...

Hi Professor Véliz, are you aware the infamous fascist Curtis Yarvin has prominent billing for HTLGI London?
August 21, 2025 at 12:35 PM
Immediately knew this was HTLGI 😆
August 21, 2025 at 9:17 AM
Everyone gets grilled at HTLGI (except Zizek, of course)...
August 21, 2025 at 8:45 AM
@barrycsmith.bsky.social hey, not sure you’ve seen how you’re doing wine tasting at HTLGI, again, and I’ve mentioned it functions as the right-wing normalisation factory a few times to you before (you might not remember), and now they’re including an open fascist that advocates chattel slavery.
August 21, 2025 at 8:41 AM
I've had long-standing beef with HTLGI because every year they ask me to do something for free, including asking me to chair a session and then requiring me to pay a load of money for accommodation and tickets (I obviously pulled out).
August 21, 2025 at 8:28 AM
I’d argue the tiny HTLGI audience wasn’t going to change that - but well-meaning liberals treating him as a pariah definitely feeds in to Reform’s narrative of their free speech being repressed by the establishment...
