I put the blue gloves on this week to make a new Tetrapak Print. This should give you a good idea of the inking up and wiping off process, starting with the plate once it's almost ready to print and working backwards.

Using (magic) latex paint on yourselves is perfectly safe! Ending up totally different and shinier and whatnot is just part of the painting process, totally.
