Tree Swallow perched at a nesting box, facing to the right in the frame. Breast feathers are white and the head and back are irredescent greens and blues with black on the wings. Song Sparrow perched on a branch facing the photographer framed by spring twigs and branches. Killdeer resting in the spring grass, possibly sitting on her nest. Bird is in profile facing to the left, and well camouflaged amongst the grass. A Horned Grebe swimming in the river, facing left in the frame. A small water bird that is typically seen around here in spring and fall during migration. This one was camera shy and lighting wasn't ideal. A lifer for me.

A pair of mallards, the female on the left, shades of brown and light cinnamon, darker line through eye and from bill to back of head. Orange and black bill. The male on the right has a green head, but in this shot the light is catching the irredescent feathers and it looks blue in places. The male also has a white ring around the neck, then a brown back and front, with lighter sides. Both have bills under the water, probably feeding on the weed below.

A male Mallard, a stocky duck with a bill yellow bill, green irredescent head, a white rig around its neck and a brown chest. This one is swimming and its side and back are light with fine brown patterning. Its tail show some dark curled up feathers. The water is a little choppy, there was quite a breeze.

A collage of three images showing the process of adding colour to wings. In the first, there is a layer of marker to act as a base. In the second, a light layer of dark pencils has been added. This is essential for the blending and burnishing of the next stage. The last image shows the final look. I have used a light blue-green pencil to blend all the darks together, to give a slightly irresdescent look to the feathers. It looks like a crow's wing when blue tinted.
