To try to explain why someone well-meaning might use 'Eire', there is quite a big move to use native names for places in English now. Cymru instead of Wales, Yr Wyddfa for Snowdon and so on. Also Türkiye, KyivNOTKiev, Aotearoa etc. Hearing that Eire is not acceptable jars with that logic.

The correct spelling is Kyiv. It has been since 1995. It was Kiev under Soviet control because the Russian language was forced on Ukrainians- who have their own language. In 2018, thanks to the #kyivnotkiev campaign, the rest of the world started to recognize the correct spelling.
