there's a type of early 90s british pop song that i can only describe as "baggy for girls" or "unseasoned new jack swing". its not shoegaze, or trip hop, or madchester, r&b, or downtempo. its my favorite sound in the world and outside of George Clanton ive never heard a convincing modern recreation

More electronic than their previous works (it was '99; everybody was futzing w it back then). Not so electronic that they made beep boops instead of rock...rocks? Still sounds like them, but they show they have more range than mere Madchester.

Not sure exactly which Madchester-era tracks I'll be devoting episodes to, but that scene will definitely get covered.
Yeah, Party People works (I think, loved it at the time but not rewatched in about fifteen years and don't know if it'd hold up) in large part because it's about the backroom bloke not the musicians.
(Though doing that didn't stop Cadillac Records being an unwatchable piece of shit...)

NOT SLEEPING AROUND was a 90s psychedelic ride of then-current Brit-pop. They had 2 bassists. Fun fact: Benny Goodman hated firing musicians. He'd hire a second player for the instrument he wanted replaced; hoping the target would quit in shame. He likely had 2 bassists as well.
