Late season dragonflies - Autumn meadowhawks (I think!) ... they were tandem ovipositing and there were other males slightly harassing the pair 🌿 #Invert

One of the Autumn Meadowhawks..seems to be a very large population of them this year..the red ones are the males,the females are greenish-brown with yellow legs.

Some people call it a "mating circle" or "a heart" or "copulatory wheel." The courtship/mating/ovipositing practices can vary from species to species. I see several species where it is mostly the female laying eggs (in water, in plants, wet soil or wood) - in some tandem ovipositing is a practice.

All the dragonflies were Variegated Meadowhawks, the species that hangs on the longest. As they land on the path, they'll hunker down as flat as possible, hugging the earth, for warmth I imagine.

After posting the video the other day about the scrappy area that used to be lawn I went out to take photos of insects and the activity was incredible. There were dozens of Autumn Meadowhawks.

Today I saw froglets less than an inch long, some bigger frogs & a few big ones. A small gray squirrel, a dash of dragonflies, but no Autumn Meadowhawks. Lichen & noisy nuthatches & a few American Robins.
