A new vaccine has demonstrated protection against melioidosis in nonhuman primates, marking a significant step toward preventing this often fatal, antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection. doi.org/hbf6qr
First vaccine shows promise in protecting from deadly melioidosis infection
Melioidosis is a little-known tropical disease now seen as an emerging global public health threat. The disease is caused by bacteria that live in soil and groundwater, and no vaccine exists to prevent infection, which can rapidly cause life-threatening pneumonia or sepsis.

"He and his doctor were uncertain how he contracted melioidosis in winter — the dry season in the tropics.

But he wondered if scratches from his dog at the time may have transmitted the bacteria."

In 3rd place, with $80,842, is the #IDSky team, #MEALioidosis. (FYI Melioidosis is due to gram neg Burkholderia pseudomallei, spread via contaminated air/soil/water, may follow weather disasters, & causes pneumonia, fever, etc...& then *MEAL* like #HCWvsHunger, get it? They’d want you to know. 🧠) 5/

A killer bacteria lurks in soil and water across tropical regions—killing 90,000 people yearly.

It mimics pneumonia, TB & sepsis. It's curable with the right antibiotics, but here's the problem: even many doctors have never heard of it.
