A good example of the vast task of scientifically describing tropical biodiversity "The global fauna of Mycetophilidae may be over 5,000 valid species, but the total species richness is estimated to be at least 10 times greater".

This fungus gnat emerged from a pile of rotting walnuts that I have a net over. Possibly Leia bivittata (Mycetophilidae), the larvae of which surround themselves in transparent bags of mucus that are extended whenever they want to move. Would like to see that. #diptera #flies #gnats #fungi #walnuts

Unambiguously a fungus gnat.

“Mycetophilidae (fungus gnats)
Top score: 22
You love obscure facts, damp forests, and mushrooms. You’re nerdy, niche, and absolutely thriving in your little world of weird. About them: They are found in damp forests, closely associated with fungi.”
Dark taxa are extremely diverse organisms that remain largely undescribed due to small size, subtle differences, & few experts.

Take this quiz to find out what you are - I'm a gall midge! whatdarktaxonareyou.static.domains/insect-quiz....
