So he bought a one-way ticket to Paris. A couple of weeks of shopping-and-shipping-home later, he took the train to London. He ran into an old friend from elementary school, Jeffrey Fettering, who was on his way to Italy and Greece, and invited Stede along. Jeffrey was an alpha, but his scents of cucumber and fresh hay did not match Stede’s marmalade at all—and they got on swimmingly as a result. Stede’s pleasant omega nature and Jeffrey’s pleasing alpha instincts had made them good friends even before they’d presented, and the vibes returned as if no time had passed at all. Stede was grateful to have a protective alpha, to ensure that he wouldn’t receive unwanted advances such as those he’d recently had to fend off in Paris, and Jeffrey was happy to have an omega friend on his arm for the same reason, since he was asexual. Off they went, to Milan, through Switzerland. Then Rome, Florence, Venice. Greece, with a stop in Croatia along the way. And from the Greek islands, they hopped over to Türkiye, Izmir first, then Istanbul. Oh, the sunshine! The spices! The culinary delights! And yes, the highrises, the traffic, the lack of greenery. But the fabrics! The handicrafts! The hospitality! The scents. Istanbul offered up everything all at once that all those other cities had only teased him with, and he decided to stay. Jeffrey moved on after a few weeks, and Stede moved out of their hotel and into a furnished apartment on one of the hills overlooking the Bosphorus.
