Here’s another #WIPWednesday for my upcoming holiday fic.
"So," Lucius says, leaning on the desk and eyeing Ed far too suspiciously for this early in the morning. Ed's stomach sinks. He's already sure he knows exactly where this is going. "You wanna tell me about the hot Daddy you were eye-fucking all afternoon yesterday? Clearly you know him, right? Or am I delusional? Because I'm pretty sure I saw him eye-fucking you right back." Shit. That's... not good. Are they really that obvious? "What the fuck're you talking about, mate?" Ed says, screwing his brows up in what he hopes passes for genuine confusion. "We're just... old acquaintances." That's how Stede had introduced him to Mary, anyway. Old acquaintances. Someone he'd been "surprised" to run into and "excited" to catch up with again after finding out he owned the bed-and-breakfast. Ed just hopes Lucius buys the lie better than he buys it himself. "Right," Lucius says. " Old acquaintances." He even throws in air quotes, rolling his eyes so hard Ed's surprised they don't fall out. "Keep telling yourself that, babe." "Lucius, I've got a boyfriend," Ed reminds him, trying for firm but landing somewhere closer to tired. "And?" Lucius blinks at him like that's barely even a speed bump. "Babe, Fang doesn't mind bringing others into the equation. You know this, because I've tried to convince you to let me get in on that action. You're the one who's strictly monogamous. But hey—" he waves a hand, smirking, "you could always try something new?"

One afternoon not long after beginning his opus, Stede’s “best frenemy” Lucius drives past Ed’s house, then slams on his brakes, backs up, rolls down the window, and calls, “You ok?” Ed gestures at his painting. “Just, you know. Working on my creative pursuit.” Lucius turns off his car and sets the parking brake before walking up to the verandah, squinting at Ed’s art. “Um. Do you think it’s safe to put so much wet paint on the canvas?” Ed shrugs. The canvas is sagging a little, especially around the dark vortex that symbolizes emotions. “That’s just layered colors to make the hand holding onto the cliff’s edge. See? The little bloody fingernails?” Lucius nods. “Mmmhmm.” “D’you hate it?” “Hate is such a strong, and wrong word.” Lucius steps closer, eyes roving all around the canvas’s surface. “But I’m wondering, what’s happening in this painting?” “This is a guy who’s clinging on to the cliff’s edge,” Ed explains patiently. “Right,” Lucius says. “But, well, I guess, why? Why cling on?” “Otherwise he’d just fall off the cliff and die.” Lucius looks at Ed, then back at the canvas, in a way that makes Ed feel like he’s seeing the deeper meaning behind it. He’s not sure how he feels about the mortifying ordeal of being known. Lucius looks back at Ed. “What if he doesn’t die? What if life just begins again?” Embarrassingly, Ed feels his eyes start to well. He turns back to the canvas so Lucius won’t see, dabbles a little splash of teal on the horizon without really meaning to, but, oh, doesn’t it look a little hopeful? And isn’t that what he’s doing already, away from the career that had consumed his life for so many years? Painting like this, taking walks in nature, fucking kayaking - it’s all life beginning again. “I like that color,” Lucius says, voice soft. “Anyway, I’ll let you get back to it.” “Yeah, cheers.” Ed returns to carefully dabbing at that teal spot, trying to blend it into the darkness of the rest of the scene.

He glances down at his shirt, blinking almost like he’s surprised to see the riot of color. “Been trying to figure out what to do next, too, I guess. Changing it up, or whatever the kids say. Feels like I’m trying on new mes all the time, and I can’t figure out which one fits right. Seems like you’ve got it all figured out, though.” Stede shakes his head, emphatically no. “Hardly. I’m lost at sea half the time.” He has, in fact, gotten lost on the river, but he’s not going to mention that right now. “You look…” Stede clears his throat. “No one should have to be one thing. And I realize we don’t know each other, but you look very you today, in case that helps.” The man’s eyes go impossibly round. “Yeah, it does, mate,” he says softly.

Little #WIPWednesday for racewalker Stede. Mostly to remind myself that I am producing at least a tiny bit of writing! CW mild ankle injury. (Stede wasn't supposed to get injured in this fic, but this section just seemed boring so I am trying to fix that by making Ed touch Stede's foot 😂) #OFMDfic
As soon as Jim sees the man’s limp, they make him sit on a treatment table and start poking and prodding at his right ankle. He follows directions, but simultaneously protests: “I’m fine, I’m fine, you should be taking care of people who really nee-yaaaaugh!” He closes his eyes and grimaces. Ed squeezes his shoulder, which feels maybe a little too familiar, but his hand is still there from supporting the guy up onto the table, and he’s not gonna let go now. Hips doesn’t seem to mind; he flashes a relieved smile at Ed. “Sorry, yup, that, uh does hurt a bit,” he says. “Yeah, I’m gonna call that a mildly sprained ankle,” says Jim, as they dig into a bag for supplies. They pull out an elastic wrap and give Ed a side eye. “What the fuck are you doing here? Thought you were doing the sweep,” they say, gaze lingering on Ed’s hand on the man’s shoulder. “What? How do you even know that?” Ed makes to pull his hand away, but then the man’s hand lands on top of it and is now holding on. Nothing to be done. He squeezes again, reassuringly, while trying to keep his face and voice as neutral as possible. “Whatever. Fang’s doing it.” Jim’s eyes narrow as their eyes flick back and forth between Ed and the man on the table. “Better make yourself useful, then,” they finally say, handing Ed the rolled up bandage, then stalking off to the other end of the tent, pausing briefly to glance over their shoulder to give Ed a smirk. What the fuck? Is Ed’s obsession with the guy obvious to literally everyone in a fifty foot radius? Is he wearing a flashing sign that says “racewalking inexplicably turns me on?”
